EMC has announced its second generation Atmos cloud storage platform that can take in objects five times faster and will have API access to Amazon's S3 service. Atmos is EMC's storage array for cloud service providers, and was introduced in November, 2008. EMC claims that Atmos 2 can handle up to 500 million objects a day. …

    cloud != EMC

    EMC is not cloud, mainframes are not cloud, Brontosaurus are not cloud.

    The point of cloud is to build a horizontally scaled cheap infrastructure so that you can deliver at a lower cost than your customers can internally whilst still making money.

    The point of cloud is not to simply hand over all your VC money and then all your revenue to EMC for something that costs 10 times what it could ever be worth, they won't be inviting you to the corporate yacht when the money has run out and your cloud startup has gone chapter 11 because all your money is buying Porsches and golf courses for EMC salespeople.

      cloud=${whatever}

      Cloud isn't about infrastructure, it's about consuming a service the way a consumer wants it, when the consumer wants it for a specific price.

      Whether the infrastructure in a given storage as a service cloud is Atmos or a massive FreeNAS platform with a gazillion disk drives managed under ZFS is neither here nor there.

      Eh?

      The "cloud" is just data storage and services that run remotely on servers. Some cloud services also have to deal with honking amounts of data for scanned documents, videos, backups and so on and EMC is stepping up to provide the hardware that can meet that demand. Not sure what the hate is for.

      Not sure where you get the idea that it's for cheap hardware. It may well be that you have 100 crappy disposable boards serving up content to customers but ultimately the data they're serving comes from somewhere such as a bigtable database running on a proper enterprise class storage device.

    Is ATMOS a trade mark of the Sontarans?
