News of the World TO CLOSE

This Sunday's News of the World will be the last ever. The massive-circulation newspaper is deeply embroiled in phone hacking and police bribery allegations. It has been printed for over 150 years. Despite its recent reputation for shag-n-tell stories about footballers it has a past history of decent investigative journalism. …

Won't be The Sunday Sun

The Sunday Sun" is a local rag in the Newcastle and Middlesborough area owned by the Mirror Group. They also own the Sunday Mail" as the Sunday counterpart to the Daily Record in Scotland, so the Daily Wail calls their Sunday rag The Wail on Sunday.

I'm guessing either "The Sun on Sunday", or maybe even "The Sun".

Meaningless distraction

The Notw closing is a distraction from the real issue here. Nearly all the papers have acted similarly.

In terms of using private detectives to rummage out stories the notw lagged behind the Fail, the Mirror, the sun and the torygraph.

Does anybody seriously believe that if someone discovers a way of getting juicy stories then competitors would follow suit?

I for one would bet unauthorised vm access (no it's not hacking) was rife among all of the fleet street rags.

Bronze badge

Though some PI's involved

were happy to email trojans to people etc. as well as listen to their VM, it is annoying when listening to voicemails is described as hacking(which in the public mind means "guy hunched over screen furiously typing while green text zooms past"). Though actually deleting voicemails is certainly analogous to hacking.

The Grauniad (& probably the Indy) are the only two nationals I can think of that aren't tainted.

Future Costs

I assume that by closing this paper now they make it much harder for anyone to take out anymore private prosecutions against them and it'll mean that the size of any compensation is severely limited now.

Same as the old boss

It was no longer a going concern so of course they killed it. It's not like newspapers make money any more.

I'm sure the new Sunday Sun, or whatever they call it (it just needs to fit in the same space), will be much better (at covering up their illegal activities).

The filthy organ is gone

Now we need to deal with the wicked witch.

Thumb Up

As Garfield would say...

Big, fat, hairy deal.

The Sun will no doubt be going into the Sunday print business, employing all the NotW staff within a month. The people at the helm will be protected and given golden handjobs, and nothing will have changed.

The nativity behind the move is more confounding. I can understand LulzSec being daft enough to think that if they quit while members were being nicked that investigations and arrests would be halted, but NotW? Seriously?

golden handjobs

They're going to piss on their hands?

Joke

"nativity"?

And then perform a religious play?

ah, but..

we need an investigative reporter to look into whether Mystic Meg saw it coming?

and, whilst i'm marginally pleased at the news, somehow i still don't trust the slimy bastards..

Funny

I was just saying to my wife this morning that if Murdoch had any sense he'd dump NoTW pronto, it's the only arse-covering measure he has left before the shit really hits the fan.

The big question is how many of the senior staff will do a Mandelson, and be brought back in through the swinging door in a few months? The ones that aren't in jail, of course.

OK, reality check. None of them will go to jail, more's the pity.

Diversionary tactic to achieve the bigger goal

News Internationals argument will now turn into 'look how responsible we are; we shut the whole paper for you. We've proven ourselves to be really responsible over his issue, so we deserve to take over 100% of BSkyB'.

Problem solved for the politicians and News International. The status quo returns . Let the public think that they have won a great victory. Unfortunately the British public will lose the larger battle in September. The media world will have moved on by then.

It's a nice diversion tactic from 'look what the NOTW actually did to get shut down and who authorised it all'.

There have undoubtedly been back door discussions with No.10 going on. The government would also like this issue to go away. Murdoch has only shut the NOTW to safeguard his 100% takeover of BSKyB in September. A case of 'it'll all have died down by that time'. Cameron is in News Internationals back pocket and still will be in Sept. .

Ha!

The News of the World is dead; long live the Sun on Sunday.

Seriously folks; the title may go but the people responsible stay.

Do as I say. And when you've done it...

On Twitter - bengoldacre:

"bbc say staff in NOTW shouting in disbelief at losing jobs while Brooks keeps hers. feel like parable on modern britain </sanctimoniousness>"

Yes, I think I'd be shouting too.

Act 1: Do this, or be fired.

Act 2: You did this. Your're fired.

Act 3: Thank you Ms Brooks. A fine job. Here's your bonus.

I wonder how long it will be before a competitor buys "the inside story at NotW" from a disgruntled ex-employee who's a bit short of cash?

Gold badge

@Peladon

It's worse than that.

The vast majority of those working there are recent recruits, so they didn't do it anyway. One of the very few people in the entire organisation who was actually around and involved in the hacking days is Crystal Tipps.

Basically they're firing 200 staff in an attempt to avoid giving her the push as, having many years as a senior NI filth-peddlar behind her, she knows where the bodies are buried and the dirt's hidden. This makes far more sense than Rupert and Rupert Lite (James) suddenly seeing the light and coming over all charitably sacrificial.

Anonymous Coward

Act 4:

Sell your story to the competition

I somehow suspect that a lot of the staff will be now taking their email stash, private documents stash and a few other stashes and going to the Graunidad or the Independent with them.

Doing the "Classic British Plc" thing of "execs are never fired" works only if the staff does not possess material which will cost you 10 times the exec golden handshake in the long run. Considering the moral standards of the average British PLC exec team all junior staff should be assumed to have a stash of compromat 10 stories high (and this is not just NoW, other RIPA violators come to mind here too).

So if the staff is really fired (which I doubt), the scandal will soon grow to multiple times its current size and engulf the other Murdoch group newspapers.

Not so much gone as rebranded. thesunonsunday.co.uk registered 5 june.

1 down several more to go....

As great as this announcement is, dont forget Monday morning there will be approx 2.5 million ex NOW readers looking for their new paper, where do they go? Daily Mail? The Sun? The Mirror? My bleeding heart, left wing sentiment says go pick up a Guardian or Independent, imagine the shock they'd have reading about events outside of the UK and stories that didn't involve footballs, their wives, girlfriends, Mistress' etc.

So lets celebrate now, but it will be interesting to see who picks up the slack in the circulation numbers.

Maybe my last comment was hasty. A can of Tramp-juice mellows one somewhat...

What I hadn't realised was that this newspaper (using the term loosely) has run for 168 years. Perhaps a better otion would've been to follow the example below:.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/8582593/Eight-million-gallons-of-water-drained-from-reservoir-after-man-urinates-in-it.html

Just clean it. Purge* would be severe, but would surely be a better alternative? Be rather a shame for a histerical ^W historical part of British ridicule ^W heritage to be thrown into the annals of history for the short-term actions of a few cretins.

I'm serious. To close it seems rather a hasty, ill-thought out decision.

184 Years!

I wonder when it started to go downhill. 1900s? 1920s? 1930s? 1969?

when it started to go downhill

My grandpop used to read it in the 1950s. He called 'the news of the screws' then, but he still bought the bloody thing. My grandma used to wear the coal-hole gloves to fetch it in, not just 'cos the newsprint rubbed off.

Murdoch bought it in 1969.

First Chink in the Armour

Now the Beast is wounded and down lets get the pitchforks and have us a revolution. Whilst the politicians aren't running scared of Murdoch and his minions, it's time to circle the monster and despatch it quickly. If even prominent Tories like Nicholas Soames and Zac Goldsmith are calling for a review of BSkyB takover, not just the lefties and people with an Axe to grind like Prescott, the time is right.

As for all those lacky's "if it wasn't for Murdoch" like Toby Young this morning on Radio 4, well they can just feck off back up his arse because the world is better without his media misinformation empire. He's a threat to democracy.

To paraphrase ColonelClaw, go-on, fuck off

If so then it is another reason to jail the guilty and those who were happy to go along profit from it.
