Pacific islands growing not shrinking, says old study
Huge compensation claims filed by Pacific states including Tuvalu have been hit by a three-year old study, dramatically "rediscovered" by New Scientist magazine today. The study concluded that many Micronesian islands are growing, not shrinking. “It has been thought that as the sea level goes up, islands will sit there and drown …

It doesn't matter if you are gullible or not
Your government will be gullible on your behalf, with your money.
Maldives
Please explain the multiple references to the Maldives, which, when I visited them a few years ago, were in the Indian Ocean, not the Pacific. And a very nice holiday it was too.
Either that, or explain the reason for the word "Pacific" in the title.
Peaceful?
They haven't had a war for years, doesn't that count?
Escrow...?
Surely if there's doubt over the legitimacy of compensation claims, the courts shouldn't be ordering one way or the other, but making a provisional judgement that places the compensation in escrow pending final evidence of the damage (ie islands going under), with a time limit? The funds would then either be used to relocate the displaced population (surely the point) or returned to the other party.
That way no-one loses.
Re: Escrow...?
Or even better, don't hand out any money at all.
By all means, feel free to chip in if you want to. You can send your cash to:

damn, the dams!
more and more dams are being built by man..
these hold water on land..the sea level rise thing, imo, is not too much to worry about..
tru, without them, the sea level would have risen, probably a lot..but it's not rising.
dredging near-shore marine aggregates is one of the worse things you can do to help erosion of your coastlines..
Adapt Or Die
If these folks are hit with a tidal wave I'm all for sending in some relief funds, but when it is instead a gradual erosion of their island (taking their argument as valid when the data argued in the article refutes that) there is little sympathy I can have for someone who doesn't choose to leave.
Does throwing money at them make them leave? Probably not so what good did it do? Perhaps we should send down a few vacation cruise ships to ferry them off and whoever wants to stay, stays and that is the end of it beyond one of the nations in the operation allowing these immigrants.
Is this relative?
There was mention on the US TV news about deep water coral being effected by the oil spill in the Gulf.
How deep was not stated, just adds to the confusion at the moment.

"Not Shrinking" - after being in water for so long ?
Hats off to Pacific, in that case.
