back to article ARM emits Cortex-R52

ARM has emitted the Cortex-R52, a microcontroller-class core for safety-critical, real-time applications, such as vehicle systems and robotics. Self-driving cars are all the rage these days, and ARM couldn't resist the hype, spinning the R52 as something ideal for autonomous autos. But the R52 is a simple beast and doesn't …

    Can't drive a car

    Things like cars should have separate semi-automous CPUS for dedicated functions. ARM cpus start at about 50c for a 32 bit alternative to a PIC, 8051 or Atmel microcontroller. Possible subsystems more reliable if each has its own SoC CPU with built in I/O:

    * Reversing alarm subsystem

    * Engine management

    * Heating control

    * ABS

    * Security / locks / immobiliser

    * Dash display management and real time clock

    * Fault monitoring, maybe lamps, air bag, seatbelts, seat position?

    * Secure Diagnostic Interface

    * Entertainment system control

    * Voice control

    Things like navigation with decent display would be a CPU more like in a tablet.

    An autonomous control system would interface to the above systems and extra sub controllers to control things normally done by human.

      You could well be on the right track; you mention reliability, and there is also security to be considered.

      This got my attention the other day:

      https://www.quantamagazine.org/20160920-formal-verification-creates-hacker-proof-code/

      The gist is that by some effort, code can be formally verified as secure, akin to a mathematical proof, as opposed to testing the code against a sample of possible inputs (you can obviously never test every combination of input). More complex systems can constructed from 'building blocks' of code that is proven to be secure.
