back to article Baidu tech chief: AI smart enough to take our jobs, not our lives. Yet

Artificial intelligence is about to transform society in the same way electricity did 100 years ago, but researchers are nowhere near producing the sort of self-aware sociopathic systems beloved of sci-fi writers. At least that’s what Andrew Ng, Silicon Valley-based chief scientist at Chinese Web giant Baidu, when he kicked …

Please allow me to restore a small omission...

"AI smart enough to take our jobs [and our money, assets], not our lives. Yet.

    There, you're welcome.

    Happy life at the park!

[We need some robo-cops at the park].

Naiveness not an exclusive attribute of the lower food chain.

"He questioned why researchers would want to work on ever smarter cruise missiles, for example."

"I do not see a clear path to getting there [self-conflicting AI].

We need a breakthrough in algorithms."

No need to go on. This is CEO chat. Future AI non related to algorithms, except for Instructions.

    No problem.

A real self aware AI that goes awry can be easily defeated. Rule 34 applies. Let it find some really good AI porn, done. It'll either lock itself in a loop, or will at least be distracted long enough for us to pull the plug.

A good AI I imagine would transcend such base, animalistic urges. At least, one hopes.

"Silicon Valley supports the concept of a guaranteed basic income."

“If as technologists we put people out of a job, we have a responsibility.” .... "He, along with much of Silicon Valley supports the concept of a guaranteed basic income."....

Is that so? Ok where are all the Silicon-Valley millionaire / billionaire "hippies" right now then???

    So lawyers will be obsolete?

If this means the elimination of lawyers and other self appointed "experts of social authority" (and quacks of all professions*) than I sure as HELL welcome our AI overlords.

*just the quacks, not folks with real wisdom.

Re: So lawyers will be obsolete?

I can't remember the details of the story but there is a si-fi novel were an electronic pope can pardon or condemn criminals to a penal planet. Of course once the hero gets there he finds out his father rigged the electronic pope to keep bad people away and let only people they wanted through.

So was I the only one to parse the tagline as I, SCROTUM ? (which is a fitting description of our future position regarding our I ROBOT overlords).

Anonymous because, really, who wants their name permanently attached to scrotums (scroti ?) in Google searches ?
