back to article OK, who unplugged the modem? North Korea's internet disappeared for four hours today

North Korea disappeared from the internet on Monday for roughly four-and-a-half hours. At around 6.30pm local time (or 6pm if you take the starving nation's recent decision to create its own time zone seriously) through to 11pm, the routes for the country vanished from the internet's routing tables, meaning nothing was coming …

And would any of the free citizens of NORK notice?

Not sure anyone outside would either (sorry to the relatives).

Re: And would any of the free citizens of NORK notice?

Probably not. NK is what Jonestown would look like today if the cult instead of killing its 900 followers had grown exponentially.

    Or at least battery backup

Well, barring multiple networks, etc, at least you would hope there was battery backup. But the point could be moot, it really wouldn't matter if North Korea's Internet was down due to power failure if the client PCs or whatever that would access it have also lost power.

The battery was removed from the backup as Fearless Leader needed it to power up his Gameboy.

    actually...

...the time zone change is not being "created" without cause and legitimate at least in my book - they were bought forward 30 mins to align to JPN time during the war. Going back 30 mins prior to the Nippon occupation makes sense.

Nothing that country does makes sense.

    Planned Vs Unplanned

The article takes the line that the outage was unplanned/unwanted. But maybe it was planned. Maybe they were doing an router upgrade? Or a new series of the Jong-uns came out on TV last night and Dear Leader wanted to make sure no-one missed it?

    Kerberos?

I mean they did just make up their own time-zone. 30 > 5

No, it was there all along

This is western propaganda designed to undermine the revolution.

Did no one else read that as China Unicorn? I'm imagining North Korea claiming their internet services are provided by a magical forest creature belonging to their neighbor.

More likely try to claim it as their own in a fit of patriotic fervour:

It has to be the Windows 10 infinite reboot upgrade! Took 'em 4 hours to dig out the old XP box and perform the "downgrade".

North Korea Networks Survive World-wide Internet Catastrophe

For four hours today, networks all across the world crashed. Only North Korea's were able to keep running during the cateclysmic outage...
