back to article Ericsson seeks cat-herding jacket, attempts EU 5G standardisation

Ericsson has taken on a new role as chief technology cat-herder, otherwise known as development coordinator of the EU’s new €8m METIS-II project, which will eventually recommend 5G specs. Funded by the EU, METIS (Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society) and now METIS II are …

    Duplex

There is are already working Duplex (in same channel) 3G phones and 4G modems (Wimax and LTE versions).

Duplex is not that brilliant a solution.

Millimetre waves are no use except for Line Of site Hotspots.

5G is more about converged Infrastructure, hand off across bands and radios without dropping connection.

TDD is very useful, it make much more efficient use of channel signalling.

        Re: Duplex

TDD is less efficient than FDD because you have to allow for TX/RX turnround every frame which wastes about 20% of the capacity unlike FDD where traffic can flow in both directions all the time.

TDD is useful where uplink or downlink dominates and you can assign a greater proportion of the resources in one direction but the imbalance needs to be pretty high to overcome the TX/RX turnaround throuput losses.

    ARM?

I don't see why ARM would join, they don't work on mobile modems.
