back to article Internet kingmakers drop ego, devise future of DNS, IP addys etc

Five months after the release of a bloated, ego–driven mess of a plan to shift control of the top level of the internet from the US government to the internet community, a greatly improved version 2.0 has been offered for public comment. The 90–page Response to the IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group Request for …

This is not a simple matter - in reality, the users of the Internet running the Internet would mean the BIG PLAYERS lording it over the rest of us. The alternative of appointing RMS as chief god is also probably worse than what we already have.

What is actually needed is a way to decentralise control and management. Granny always told us that it was bad to put all your eggs in one basket

We could, of course, just rename ICANN to ICANT and carry on as we are!

"Granny always told us that it was bad to put all your eggs in one basket"

While "The Prince" taught us that government by committee, while adequate in tranquil times, tends to fall flat when swift action is necessary, particularly when that action is necessary but unpopular. So you can't win either way. Rule by one's swift but subject to the one's whims while rule by many curbs any one whim but is caught by friction whenever something important must be argued.

    OK.

"... the US wants to step away from ruling the internet like an unelected king..."

"ICANN, of course, would love to run IANA all by itself..."

The King is dead, long live the King!

So we are swapping a supposedly accountable authority. (The US government.) for a non-accountable authority with a long track record of arbitrary decisions favouring their own interests.

What's in it for the rest of us?

Working Link Re: 404 remark above

The link in the article doesn't work because some retard-o-matic editing function or conversion reformatted the minuses to 'special dashes'.

    "the internet community is convinced"

Yeah, the internet community is also convinced that online petitions are actually useful.

I say no. Anything that is under the authority of ICANN is tainted and cannot be trusted, just as ICANN cannot be trusted to anything that its board thinks is contrary to its interests (hint: nothing to do with running the Internet).

The board of ICANN should be suspended, charged and tried for criminal entente, profiteering and not respecting its own charter.

Personally, I'd take them all behind the chemical shed to have them shot.

Put some new blood in there, someone who actually gives a hoot about the Internet and not just about lining his pockets. In this case, the enemy you don't know can't be worse than the ICANN board.

Sure it can. The problem with throwing out the old is that the old can conceivably be WORSE. After all, who ELSE would have the desire AND ambition (vital to get the seat over anyone else's objections) to replace ICANN OTHER than those who are like ICANN only worse?
