back to article If the COMMISH says block that email account, BLOCK IT!

Europe’s General Court has said the European Commission was right to fine a Czech company for not blocking access to an email account during an antitrust case. In November 2009, the Commish ordered Energetický a Průmyslový Holding (EPH) to block email accounts of key personnel by changing the password to one known only to …

there is nothing to stop it demanding to see Larry Page’s email account

There is also nothing to stop it demanding to see a unicorn. If the mail server is not in Europe they may have the same luck.

Not quite. While it is true that they might not get the email, they can still hit them with sanctions. The point is that the inquiry is legitimate, the police/commission have the legal right to examine the materials, and not providing them constitutes obstruction of justice (not claiming all of these legal devices OUGHT to be legal, just recognizing that under the current system they are). Once you've got obstruction of justice you can slap the company, through whatever branch is local, with the fine. At some point the fines will become noticeable, especially when they start per day fines.

    Finally a use for POP3.

Now company's will be going to the POP3 protocol for security.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) store's data on a server somewhere, commonly used for web based email. POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3)stores data to the local machine.

Would an encrypted POP3 account be known as POPE mail?

POP3 can be configured to leave mail on a server, likewise IMAP4 I believe can be configured to delete mail from a server too(though this use case is probably really rare).

Seems like all the more reason to run your own email server, don't use a service provider whom can snoop on you (likely) without you knowing about it (I have hosted my own email for about 18 years now)

The case in point was a company running its own email server...

As to POP3, they would probably have confiscated the devices of those executives as well as part of the initial investigation.
