“real-time insurance, where the driver's rates depend on how they drive at that moment”

As long as that's completely autonomous then it's OK.

ie. Feed in all the aspects of driving to create a unique profile and then match that to the insurance accident and cost of accident database - that's fair.

If it just measures speed/acceleration and therefore decides you are a bad driver then it's not good - we don't want people driving like grandmas everywhere just so they aren't penalised ... and that would probably lead to more accidents too.

Was suggested, trialed and failed for exactly that reason.

You got black marks for every time over the speed limit, every sudden braking.

The trouble was it didn't know what street you were on, so it let you go 70mph past a school and penalised you if you ever stopped for a yellow light or a kid that ran into the road.

That must have pre-dated GPS?

Love to see how this develops.

Although, the cynic in me would say that Sydney has had self-driving cars for years ... you know, the ones that get to Casula, engage cruise control and turn their brains off until they reach Cooma (though to be fair, Canberra's not immune from that either).

You could say you arrive in Cooma in a coma. Or simply you arrive in Coma...

Canberra's full of useless drivers too but they seem to be paying complete attention ... to running you off the road.

It's brilliant! You pay only a nominal fee until the moment you have an accident, when your rates rise to match the cost of the accident and then drop back to normal immediately thereafter! It's flawless! It's perfect!

It's not insurance!

"celebrated Australian car-share company" ??

You mean the company run by a couple of spivs who phoenixed their bankrupt first attempt ("Newtown Car Share").

Ask Go Get if they still have their booking system programmed in Visual Basic or did they eventually get it contracted out to get it done properly. I suspect Go Get has nothing to do with the research program at UNSW other than loaning a car.

Sounds like they are just hoping for some cheap marketing. Just a suggestion the reporter has been led to portray a particular view by a delicious press release :).
