back to article El Reg seeks new mobile, wireless tech writer - could it be YOU?

The Register is looking for a new mobile and wireless technology correspondent to work out of our London newsroom. Realistic contenders for the job will already be thoroughly familiar with The Reg: it will be of interest however that the worldwide editorial team is currently expanding based on sound business performance. I just wonder how long it will take before the name truly disappears. The user formerly known as E appears to have vanished, but the comments keep coming...

A bit more than just disappeared, everything he did has been erased.

It's the internet, nothing disappears. The person likely behind that handle was 'doxed' in a forum thread about the incident. For all his annoying BS here, he was sometimes entertaining and a few times had something poignant to add, sadly his inborn inability to glean social norms from human interactions meant he had to be taken out back and Old Yeller'd (assuming the dox was accurate, but it seems so).

True.

While they could be annoying (what whatever reason) they had just enough informed comments to keep them out of my ignore filter.

And they did have the whole SHOUTY HEADLINE thing pretty much down.

No, I'm sorry, but he doesn't meet the required standards. The article clearly states

Technical expertise in the underlying engineering and physics would also be highly desirable, and some knowledge of the wider telecoms and networking field is essential.

On that basis alone, he's got no chance...

:-)

Working out of London Office?

Why?

Do the duties involve refilling the coffee machine?

I'd have thought you could save expensive office space and travel time by having someone work 50% longer from home.

There is this thing called Broadband.

Re: Working out of London Office?

I work 99% from home, I own a mobile, but only use it for making phone calls. (Apparently my phone can do millions of things, I just don't need them)

Sorry Mr. Pitiful, that parenthetical statement just disqualified you from consideration for this post.

True.

He probably would have also fluffed the question "What would you do without your mobile, if you lost it say?"

The correct answer for this is "Kill myself, as my entire life is on it.*"

*No. Mine isn't either.

Not necessarily. How about I handle the photography and you handle the actual "writing" chores for a reasonable percentage. Like the contractor who outsourced his stuff to someone in China?

Shan't be applying then.

I've got a City & Guilds in Desktop Publishing, surely that's more than enough.... When do I start ;-)

Sound business practice? At the Reg? Just imagine. You can make money with snarkiness and BIG! LOUD! HEADLINES!

I'd love to do it

Unfortunately I've not been able to look favorably on mobiles since the time I slipped in the shower and ended up in the emergency room.

For the 17th time.

I almost wish I resided in London, but it's too far of a commute from Boston, and I'm not sure I'm snarky enough to measure up to El Reg's inimitable editorial style.

Whatever happened to....

Orlowski? Thought that was his beat. Did he have a coronary or climb the ladder or get tired of reviewing phones or get run over by a fanboi or what?

Bold predictions

"The successful candidate will already have a solid record of experience covering the mobile .........., and will have expert knowledge ......."

Hmm... What if he won't?

I'd be more interested in moving back to London when a position for robotics correspondent becomes available.

Competence in photography would be an advantage.

I'm glad you're not following the 'have iPhone will travel' photography philosophy that the Chicago Sun-Times does.

Lead with the comment

Knowing absolutely sod all about wireless technology, shouldn't in this modern inclusive age stop me from filling this role.

My thought would be to to put up a headline like, "Whoa, somebody just did something mobilee kinda thing" then allow the comments to flow in with wild conjecture about whatever it was they read somewhere else.

Then just CUT and paste the best comments into the body of the article.

Any complaints from the authors of the comments that I use can kiss my T&C's

And as a special one time offer I'll do it for half the celery and in half the thyme.

I expect my attention to detail will not go unnoticed either, as I assume standards will need to be maintained.

Something tells me ...

... that despite being a coherent writer, with a pretty good clue as to the subject matter, I'm out of the running. I ain't moving out of Sonoma, even if I do love London's greenbelt :-)

Hint, ElReg: This kind of position doesn't require physical presence.

Cheers to whoever lands the gig! Should be fun.

It sounds from the requirements that you guys are really making your own device and need someone who can do all/most the work alone including the corporate espionage (camera skills bit).

I won't be in town in Q2 next year to pick up my device (nodding head yes). It better be secure....-ish.

I considered it. Moving abroad isn't that big a deal, I've done it before.

Driving on the wrong side of the road again would take a brief bit of getting accustomed to again.

However, there is one stumbling block for this generalist.

You can't afford my rates.

I typically get 32 pounds per hour, with 40 hours guaranteed and overtime isn't all too unusual. Had one offer for 47 pounds per hour (all today's conversion rate). Didn't like the latter's benefit to wage ratio though and the distance was excessive at three hours to work and back. With bad weather in winter equaling a full 8 hours drive time on ice and snow.

Sorry, but no.

Besides, with some offerings of devices out there, I'd probably be unable to refrain from the use of profanity in my review. ;)
