    Outsourcing

What they really need to do is to outsource the management.

Lets face it, most companies assume (*) that its a zero skill job which can be done by anyone, just follow the process right.

Oh, maybe they have out sourced the management, that's why there are so few British firms left.

(* we can safely assume this because >95% of the evidence shows it to be true)

The promise of reducing costs is the main driver

And, like with any other service, you tend to get what you pay for.

Further, you get ONLY what you pay for. Anything else is you want is where the profit lies, and you will want something else and you'll pay through the nose for it.

It only looks cheap because it appears in a different column on the balance sheet. It's a thin line between good accountancy, cooking the books and fraud.

So when you remove all the marketingspeak it resolves to:

    You're fired.

    Admission of failure

Outsourcing a part of your business is admitting that someone else can do it cheaper, if not better than you can. Although that's what successful businesses do: focus on their strengths and buy in goods and services from outside (after all, no business makes everything it owns or uses - that would be silly), the question that needs to be asked is whether IT is a core part of your business or simply a necessary evil.

Given how much all modern businesses rely on their IT to survive it seems short-sighted to hand over total day-to-day control of it to the lowest bidder.

More people that still haven't learnt that outsourcing doesn't work.

Same old story, will these people ever learn?

Over my career I have seen IT outsourced, then brought back in-house when they realise that they are not getting the service they thought they would, or achieving cost saving as they thought.

A few years later and when budgets are the biggest topic (usually when the tories are in!) they outsource again in the vain hope of achieveing a good result.

A few years later and the service is brought back in-house.

This is the calibre of of "execs". Wet behind the ear just out of uni loonies.

You can not realistically expect to achieve the best level of service and save money by outsourcing. It just does not make sense.

Of course the usual excuses apply, SLA, ITIL, yadda yadda yadda.

I do love a good press release

Thank heavens for Pinsett Masons' marketing team, otherwise El Reg might actually have to write an article. Expert application of Copy > Paste, good job. Only the keenest sorts will notice that everyone in the article is a specialist from Pinsett Masons.

Troll icon because, well, because I couldn't find a sockpuppet one.

    cheaper it is not!

I recently moved to Canada, and a large Canadian Telco manages our environment (in process of taking it back in house) not only do we not have the keys to our own assest/infrastructure we are paying through the nose. let me give you a few examples:

    1. new AD account $80

    2. snapshot of a VM $200 (30second job)

    3. shutdown a VM $400

    4. support cost on a Cisco Switch $450pm (No real SLA) one recently went down 7hrs before they did anything on it (they were not even notified till we told them).

    5. racking equipment $170phour!!!

we put several Million their way each year, that in turn could provide 10-30 jobs and bring it all back in house for a higher standard of quality I assure you!

Outsourcing is not the way to go, and agree with other posters its Mgmt who make these fucking stupid decisions to make their CV look good "in cost cutting exercises".

    Fools

Outsourcing is way of management admitting they don't know how to run a business. The outsource is usually promoted as being cheaper, but in the long run almost certainly costs more and delivers an inferior service.

Been there, done that, met the disgruntled users (and IT employees) too many times to know otherwise.
