Do Not Force ISP Filtering of Pornography and Other Content

Responsible department: Department for Culture, Media and Sport

The government is currently trying to push a bill forcing ISPs to provide opt-out pornography filtering, however this is an issue that fails to address any real problems.

Bad parenting is the real problem, and bad parents will simply allow the filter to be enabled and believe it protects their children, even though the filters are easily (even trivially) circumvented. Parents need to supervise and educate their children about internet use, not rely on filters of dubious effectiveness.

It also sets a poor precedent that objectionable content can be blocked at the ISP level in the name of protecting children, who are in fact being harmed more by poor parenting. Aside from content of a clearly illegal nature the government should not be forcing the presence of filters at all, but instead pushing to improve the involvement of parents in a child's life, and to promote education over flimsy, disruptive, and money-wasting "solutions"

These partitions don't lead to them doing anything, they just leave excuses on them, the whole petition site is a red herring, I hope am wrong, but it appears that the large majority of them are fobbed off.

Have you tried hosting the petition on another site? The newspapers don't help either, they only seek to exaggerate the problem, they always do!

I'm not the one that created the petition. I just signed it.

As for the rest, assuming that the petition is started does it really matter where it's hosted? If they give an excuse on their own site then they're still going to give that same excuse if the request comes from elsewhere.

At least they'll read it and know how people feel.IE That they AREN'T happy about this. It's been in the top six (and usually at number one or two) petitions for many days now.

It's not just about the adult material. It's about what comes next and what else will be filtered. It's about precedent, and the future possibility of not being about to opt out. A slippery slope concern really.

I am sure I can speak for many people. We know how these repressive governments work and we don't want it.

This is a misguided petition. The Government is shirking it's responsibilities to protect the UK from undesirable material.

What we need is the concept of an electronic border where the government vet what comes in and goes out electronically from the UK.

GCHQ already monitors this traffic and it would be a small extension to implement such a system.

It cannot be left to ISPs.
