back to article Kinky Android X-ray app laid bare as malware

Japanese mobile users are being warned not to download an Android app promising to allow them to see through clothes with the phone’s camera, as the malware hidden within will steal address book data and try to blackmail them to the tune of ¥29,000 (£202). The app's first manifestation is usually an SMS message appearing to come …

Really...?

So that app doesn't actually work...?

Damn.

Still, at least I've got something to look forward to - have just replied 'yes' to all of the penis enlargement offer emails - my suits are at the tailors already being altered as we speak - and am waiting for the package to be forwarded by the Irish ambassador who is holding it for me in Dulles Airport...

Re: Really...?

Just like those adverts for x-ray specs 20 years ago.

Aimed at a certain gullible demographic, the Android user.

At least the Apple censors would have seen this coming, though if it had got past them downloads would probably have been in the millions.

@AC

You really think Apple would have caught something like this?

Just look at the hundreds of 'mirror' apps in the Apple App store, they just turn the screen black so you can see yourself in the reflection. Apple make no attempt to stop those sort of scams.

Re: Really...?

I was under the impression that it wasn't actually in the Google Play store, users needed to download it specifically and install it, which would require them to have already turned off the secure sources option (a stupid thing to do, unless you're dev'ing or pirating).

Re: @AC

The mirror apps are not malware though, just dumb. Different thing entirely.

This gave me an idea

Why not make a 'real' X-Ray nudity app.

Augmented Reality! Detect the features and outline of a person, toss some porno imgaes on top of that!

Point it at some mounds, get some digitally enhanced, bare ones on screen in place of them!

Maybe it exists..

Re: This gave me an idea

I haven't tried it, but unless the tracking was very accurate, there would be a risk of falling into the 'uncanny valley'. It might be more suitable for 'cartoonising' the subjects, for fun and giggles though.

Of course, you could cover the subject in ping pong balls on a stage next to a render farm, as was done on Avatar- a rough rendering was done in real time during the actors performances, to give the crew an idea of what the eventual scene would look like.

A batch of Sony camcorders...

...were withdrawn from sale many years ago, because of the way a 'low light mode' was implemented. However, this Infra Red detection actually made people look as if they were just wearing underwear.

Those units that Sony couldn't recall sold out very quickly indeed.

You can do that with pretty much any camera with a true infrared nightvision mode, just put a bit of exposed 35mm film over the lens and switch on the night vision. More bra`s n panties than an m&s department store.

Works best on cotton garments, doesnt work on nylon very well.

The Sony nightvision camcorder I had was great for playing gulf war in the garden, It really was good for the time/price.

I can understand why people were duped

After all, airport security has those machines that can see through clothes.

I do worry about the kind of person that thinks a free app will do the same job though.

Yeah, you'd expect that you'd at least have to prise the camera module apart and remove the IR filter.

In other news, pills won't make your member bigger, belly fat can be shed by diet and exercise, and girls in Basingstoke do not want to meet you.

viagra does make you member "grow". Belly fat can also be gotten rid of with dysentry and you really dont want to meet the girls in basingstoke (especially the festival on a saturday).

"girls in Basingstoke do not want to meet you."

The feeling is mutual.

Re: I can understand why people were duped

I have nothing against girls in Basingstoke, but always found it a strange claim on pesky web adverts, since I live no where near Basingstoke. Nor, as far as I know, does Basingstoke enjoy the same reputation in popular culture as, say, Ipanema or California.

Re: I can understand why people were duped

Chances are the advertisers' geolocation software *thinks* you're in Basingstoke and is attempting to personalise it with pretend "local" girls. It probably has something to do with the location of your ISP's servers or infrastructure and that's the nearest it can (or can't) guess your true location.

I've had similarly stupid attempts from ads that think I'm in the south of England (I'm actually in Scotland).

If the Android user decides to follow the link and download the app

Errm, so it's not on the Play Store then...

This simply highlights WHY users shouldn't disable the Android security that prevents sideloading, despite what Facebook and Amazon would like you to do....

Who needs an X-ray app?

What with all the women around here wearing Lululemon yoga outfits.
