Another Apple retail chief crashes out the door
The Apple exec tipped to take over as head of its Retail unit has just quit the company, it was announced yesterday. Jerry McDougal, vice president of Retail at Apple since 2000 has resigned to spend more time with his family. McDougal's exit comes three months after his former boss John Browett, was booted out from his role as …
"Spend more time with his family"
That's Corporate Gobbledigook for "jumped before being pushed".
Re: "Spend more time with his family"
At a certain level, you're not usually officially fired unless there is a public scandal.. About the closest to it you can get is Sinofky getting fired over Win 8.
Re: Company
Sounds like it's getting a bit Kremlin in Cupertino.
Re: Company
Apple is innovating again. Fire the marketing and sales execs BEFORE the bad quarterly numbers get reported.
Well there's 4 top retail people available now....
The bosses of Comet, HMV, Jessops and Blockbuster.
Trevor Moore, cx of HMV, was the former cx of Jessops. David Adams, non-exec director at HMV, was the former chairman at Jessops.
Two fine candidates if you are looking to rationalise staffing levels, to be sure.
Microsoft Stores execs must be worried then ;-)
Imagine what Apple top brass would do if their stores were deserted and sold bugger all, like Microsoft's stores.
Re: Microsoft Stores execs must be worried then ;-)
I passed the first Microsoft Store I've seen, in New York's Times Square, just the other day. I can't talk to sales totals but it was definitely packed. That said, I'd imagine it's difficult for anything next to Times Square not to be packed.
If Apple's Stores stopped selling anything? I don't think Apple would do anything because I think that'd be symptomatic of the end of Apple. The post-2000 Apple as a purely consumer company lives and dies on its ability to attract lifestyle purchasers. I'm not sure they'd be able to contract back to the design and technology-obsessed* niches they held last time things went bad.
(*) in that the PowerPC really was quite a bit faster than the Pentium for a long period in the late 90s and RISC snobbishness shouldn't be underestimated, and nowadays there's the 'it's also a fully certified UNIX' angle plus things like the retina display.

That was DTP, and those musicians who had parted with their Atari STs. These days they have held on to designers and musicians (though you really need less $s worth of hardware to do the same job), have gained the lifestyle segment but also have some of the older and wealthier 'I want it to just work' bunch, too.
The wild-card is that Apple can command (in terms of perception and profit) an emergent product category, as they did with MP3 players, phones and tablet... but I can't think what that next 'must have' thing might be (despite the TV rumours).

Three words: Retina display laptops. DTP users practically wet themselves when Apple announced them. Windows has nothing similar and no impetus towards them either.
"Jim Bean is moving to Retail..."
To a counter job perchance?
Time to cash in those share options before they are worthless.
Options
AAPL is actually up a bit over 20 today, at the moment, so assuming you are talking about calls, things are looking good for you right now. You still need to sell them before time decay kills you, but that's always true of options.
Now if you own puts, you might be worried.
Re: Options
The rumours say some people only want the share price below 550 until something like the 19th of this month so don't expect to go much higher for at least a few days.
Keeel themmm....
See title, probs only relevant to people who watch "Armstrong & Miller"...
True, Apple has wobbled recently
But now Mr Bean is in charge all will be well again.
Re: Mr Bean
But Mr Bean's character always gets killed at the end of the first film/series. Oh wait, perhaps I've got the wrong Bean.
On a sea of...one hundred billion dollars
You may be right, but sinking by 'worth more than Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook put together' standards...
