Icons for Anonymous Cowards

I suggest we give AC more icons to choose, but only ones related to AC, let's say the Trollface could be considered and the black helicopter and the Orwell icon. All others can be restricted as they have no significance to ACs

@Anonymous Сoward: No.

Just no.

If you aren't interested in using your already pseudo-anonymous[1] handle here on ElReg, and prefer the "AC" handle, nobody actually cares. "AC" posts are meaningless, in a month-to-month time frame. I, personally, rarely read AC posts when I notice it's AC.

Frankly, if ElReg dropped the AC option entirely, I'd cheer!

[1] Do you ACs really think that ElReg has no clue as to your IP address? You are just as visible to ElReg as my "jake" handle is. Think about it. Seriously.

@Jake

Come on Jake, you aren't being totally fair suggesting anything posted as AC isn't worth reading. Handles may be semi-anonymous but I'm pretty sure that people who know me well can work out who "Corinne" is, and though I tend to post under my handle there have been a few posts I've made that could be severely career limiting if anyone could have worked out who it was, hence AC in those rare cases.

Does that make my comment less worth reading, the fact I've decided to protect my future income? You may be lucky (or skilled) enough to be in a position where you don't need to give a flying one about what you say openly, but please consider us poor average people who do need to care about it.

Re-read mine for content. Basically, the "AC" platform isn't coherent. I see it as nose.

Recommendation: Choose a handle that doesn't infringe on your RealLife[tm] in any meaningful way, and don't put enough info into your posts to allow J. Random Luser to track you down in said RealLife[tm]. And then stick to said handle, at least in this kind of forum. You aren't "you" here, rather you are what your handle contributes.

That said, I've had a few College friends from three+ decades ago track me down here in Sonoma, CA based on my posts here on ElReg ... Not necessarily a bad thing.

Beer, because ... Well, because I have Wild Boar hanging in the smoke house ;-)

Re: @:Corinne (was: @Jake)

Oh my handle doesn't reflect me in RL in any way at all. But sometimes it's hard to make a contributing & relevant post without letting SOMETHING of who you are or where you've been slip. For example, anyone who's read certain of my posts can work out I'm female IRL, like cars, have worked in certain industry sectors and roughly what sort of knowledge levels I have about certain subjects. Likelwise I'm not surprised anyone has tracked you down - there can't be THAT many outspoken techies who live on a ranch & show a particular breed of dog!

Mostly I'm not concerned at all about someone knowning what "Corinne" thinks on a particular subject & who she is IRL. But sometimes I may want to say something that really isn't politic or could possibly seriously damage my career, and as such I wouldn't want anyone to know I was the one who said it. A good example is one that I haven't done but I know many others here have - commenting on a company and their treatment of staff, while under the threat of redundancy from that same company. Guaranteed that the person would be first in line for that redundancy or maybe even fired for gross misconduct, even if what they posted was entirely true and needed to be said.

Black Helicopters

So you don't want AC being able to use icons like this one instead of being associated with skids like Anonymous? they use the V for Vendetta masks too you know!

Oh great since I didn't post as AC the black helicopters will have a much easier time finding me, eek!
