Apple said to have let the name of the next OS X cat out of the bag
Apple is said to have chosen the feline nomenclature for its next iteration of OS X, and according to the customary "reliable source," that name is to be "Lynx". We suggest, however, that you take this rumor with more than the traditional grain of salt. As AppleScoop reports, their source is not a Cupertinian per se, but rather …
RE: Also Cougar
Probably,

Re: RE: Also Cougar
So they can release a new edge Mondeo based coupe?
My vote goes for Mac OS-X Civet. The cat best known for it's shit.
After all, OS-X is almost the worse OS for security on the planet - now with over 1800 known vulnerabilities: http://secunia.com/advisories/product/96/
To put that in perpsective, Windows XP has about 450. (About about the only thing worse than that for vulnerabilities is a Linux distribution!)
I'll switch to OSX
The day OSX Ocelot comes out.
Ocelots are awesome!
Re: I'll switch to OSX
How do you titillate an ocelot?
Oscillate its tits a lot!
Re: I'll switch to OSX
Yeah, but they'll probably sue Canonical for having used the word Ocelot in connection with 11.10
Re: SERPENTINE BABOO! SERPENTINE!!!
LOOK AT HIS TUFTED EARS!
Re: I'll switch to OSX
Not before I sue you for posting the same joke ad nauseum...
Re: I'll switch to OSX
Ubuntu meanwhile prepares to release Raring Ringtail. Oh dear.
That would be the same Ubuntu who previously released 10.04, better known as Lynx. Huh...
Re: Ocelots
Can't hear that without remembering......
BRIAN: Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Jaguars' earlobes. Wolf nipple chips. Get 'em while they're hot. They're lovely. Dromedary pretzels, only half a denar. Tuscany fried bats.
Larks' tongues. Otters' noses. Ocelot spleens.
REG: Got any nuts?
BRIAN: I haven't got any nuts. Sorry. I've got wrens' livers, badgers' spleens--
Re: I'll switch to OSX
And have the Beatles record an album to go along with it.
I'd suggest calling it Revolver Ocelot.
...what Apple plans to do after OS X 10.9...
I see two possibilities:
1. OSX 11 - Tufnel, or
2. OS X11 - back to the basics
snow leopard was the last cuddly release
i'm not upgrading until tabby and/or they drop the ios-ification of os x
OS
XI (11) is after X (10). After 12 years should they be doing a new major version rather than iteration? maybe though iOS is OS "XI"
Mines the one with Roman Numerals Pocket Watch.
Re: OS
Speaking about roman numerals, wouldn't it be appropriate to give OSX 10.10 the slightly tautological name OS XXX?
Re: OS
XI (11) is after X (10). After 12 years should they be doing a new major version rather than iteration?
At an OS X Terminal command prompt, try
say os x
say OS X
The first says "Oh Ess Ecks", the second "Oh Ess Ten".
Inc Lawsuits against the underarm smelly company.
Lawsuits include:
Lynx - Africa
Lynx - 2012 Final Addition
Lynx - Dark Temptations
and 12 other fragrances just for infringing patent 101 - Your name R belongs to us...
Re: Inc Lawsuits against the underarm smelly company.
Actually, it'd be kind of apt given that they'll both stink to high heaven.
It's the one with the little red arrow on it, Apple fans! =D
LynxOS
I remember cross compiling code from AIX to LynxOS for various embedded systems - looked them up and glad to see they're still going:
http://www.lynuxworks.com/rtos/rtos.php
I'm sure they'll be overjoyed with the realisation that they may now have two products (Lynux and LynxOS), both of which aren't a million miles away from other operating system names.
Re: LynxOS
I can confirm that LynxOS is still being actively used.
It may not be kicking very hard, but it's definitely alive!
OSX Lynx
Will it be known as OSX Axe everywhere outside the UK and Australia?
Surely...
...it's gotta be either Tigger (just to piss off Di$ney) or Lolcat?
Lynx → Linux
"Lynx" isn't a million miles away from "Linux", particularly if spoken with a transatlantic drawl.
I wonder if Mr Torvalds will sue?
Re: Lynx → Linux
I'd expect so - just make sure the witnesses are standing far enough away so that the differences aren't obviously discernable...
...I believe that's the accepted practice...
Re: Lynx → Linux
...I believe that's the accepted practice...
Nah, the accepted practice is to deliberately alter the appearance of what you're claiming is a copy to make it look like a copy, then sue based on that. So you'd just write Lynx with an i.
Where's the helicopter icon when you need it?
Can AgustaWestland sue?
Re: Where's the helicopter icon when you need it?
<====== here
I reckon they should call it OSX Danny John-Jules
Mines the tiger-print one with the Red Dwarf X DVD in the pocket.
Pussy
Why don't they call it Pussy, everybody loves a good pussy.
Hyena would be good for a laugh. ;-)
But if advertising is to be believed, Lynx will definitely get more of the ladies on board.
If the OS is Lynx…
…does that mean they’re replacing Safari? One can only hope, and you have to admit that a browser with no graphical capability whatsoever is superior to the crap that is Safari.
kittehs
I Have a client that exclusively uses cat names for their desktops. They're up to 80 clients now, leading to two interesting side effects:
1) it's the cuddliest Active Directory in the world
2) Setting up a new Desktop requires 10 minuets of Wikipedia slog: The last three desktops were called Cymric, Chausie, and TopCat
Re: kittehs
"I Have a client that exclusively uses cat names for their desktops. They're up to 80 clients now, leading to two interesting side effects:"
When you get to the office is the man on the door a short, moustached mexican who says:
"we got all kinds of pussy........"
?
Ceiling Cat
That's what happens when you put all your data in the iCloud.
Surely ...
Given Apple's recent strategy Cloud Leopard has to be in the running
Re: Surely ...
Clouded Leopard, I think you meant. But admittedly that's not as funny.
Most beautifully patterned cat there is, IMHO.
So are they going to go after my favorite web browser?
or maybe an OS
http://www.lynuxworks.com/rtos/
how about a programming language
