Rockstar's GTA V publicity went into overdrive today with a new trailer and more details about what the game has in store for fans. For starters, the publisher says GTA V's game world will be bigger than San Andreas, GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption combined. Memorising your way around may prove tricky, especially as the entire …

A console game which will be ported to the PC perhaps.

Still, it will probably have better graphics and maybe a tweak or two in the game play BUT it will still be the same old same old.... Unless they put some proper porn in it!

Wow

GTA4 was the reason why I got a 360.

This looks fantastic!

The sheer work that goes in to rendering these huge environments just amazes me some times.

Looks like it'll be a multiple DVD or a huge installer for the 360 though, best clear some space!

"GTA4 was the reason why I got a 360."

That makes no sense. You either had only PC so you could have waited to have more options of what to do with / in the game or you had only PS3, which had its own version...

Re: Wow

I have GTA4 and Episodes from Liberty City on 360, and believe me, it looks like shit compared to the same game on PC cranked up. I have my 360 connected to my monitor and I switched between to compare.

I was surprised at the difference, really, because I'd played GTA4 on 360 for quite some time (completed it, and both expansions), but there it is.

I wouldn't waste your time on the console version, but sadly the PC version will probably be much, much later.

You assume that his PC was good enough to run it? I got the 360 for this too, simple because I couldn't afford a gaming PC.

Exactly!! I have given up on the money pit of trying to keep up with gaming PCs, along with it's traditional location in the computer room, and went for a console which at least is guaranteed to run games released for it. I have enough money pits already. Considered a PS3 but back then it was nearly 2x the price, had real need for the bluray, and its potential USP of PS2 back catalogue compatibility was being removed.

but I want it now!!

can't wait.

not a heavy gamer but the GTA series just keeps getting better and I am psyched for this.

I wished they'd hurry up and release details of pre-order bonuses or special editions though, never mind posters and photo viewers, I wants me some neat in-game stuff. nitrous on my Sultan RS please.

one thing that worries me is this supposed lack of real estate.. I am going to need a very big garage please.

Beware the hype

Perhaps GTA V will be a good game, possibly even a great game but it will be in spite of the hype. You simply cannot trust a word which comes out of the press between now and release. Not a single word. Read this to see why:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1542/pr_and_the_game_media_how_pr_.php?page=1

Look at all the breathless gushing reviews of GTA IV, LA Noire, Red Dead Redemption. They were all good games but they also had some really serious flaws and you wouldn't know it from reading some of the hyperbole that went out with them. That's because Rockstar's PR goes into overdrive and hammers on the press to deliver the scores they want to see regardless of the game deserving it.

Re: Beware the hype

I can hold my hands up and say I've never been hammered by Rockstar. Not once.

Then again, I love all of the games you just mentioned and while not without flaws, they're definitely worthy of high praise... LA Noire was under-rated imo.

I do agree that smaller sites/ blogs are often "scared" to speak out, worried that any negative press will lead to "blacklisting" or finding it hard to get review code.

However without the readership to back you up, of course you'll be lower down the pecking order and probably need to do loads of buttering up to get preferential treatment.

Unfortunately, the world is driven by fear. Perhaps there are a few exceptions, but I don't think game publishers are literally approaching people and 'hammering' them into positive reviews. When you think about the way it's all set up, the buttering-up of publishers by small blogs is probably an inevitability.

I can't understand why any site with significant readership would be pressured into this kind of thing, though.

"Exclusives" on the other hand may come with a "critical opinion not allowed" guideline, but I've never seen that with tech and haven't the experience of an exclusive game review yet, so can't say for sure. Again, if so, fear is probably to blame rather than a conscious effort on the publisher's part.

I guess the moral of the story is, always be objective and stick to sites that you know you can trust.

I'm not just saying this because I work here, but El Reg is definitely one of the good guys! We're critical where necessary and would laugh at any threats of blacklisting, before making an article out of it to embarrass the company in question further. :-)

Re: Beware the hype

I didn't say they were bad games, but I did suggest that the games were hyped to high heaven and there was no way they justified their scores. As for sites you can trust, I don't know if you can trust any which hypes this game. You have to read the article to understand the marketing machine which is behind this game.

Re: Beware the hype

LA Noire was game of 2011 for me.. and I went into it with no expectations at all having not read a single bit of press or review about it. Just bought it on Steam because it was reduced, I like adventure games, I was in bed sick for a week, and the whole thing looked quite interesting.

I think there's a danger that by getting involved in the hype, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. If you've been told that product X is the best thing EVER EVER EVER for 12 months, then when you finally get your hands on it even the tiniest flaw is going to stick out like a sore thumb and feel like a crashing disappointment. But if you go in without knowing very much about it at all, these flaws will seem negligible in comparison to the wonder of the great bits..

Re: Beware the hype

GTA IV, LA Noire and Red Dead Redemption didn't just have tiny flaws, they had some pretty annoying obvious gameplay issues that would easily knock a point of their scores. Sub HD graphics, janky physics. LA Noire in addition had some really bad acting (doubtless because the actors had to say their lines while sat in something resembling a barber's chair), and lack of control.

I own all of these games (and a couple of GTA IV expansions) and most are good games - I think LA Noire is mediocre and coasts on its tech. But when I look at them I do not see the games that the reviews or the hype promised and I made sure to buy them after release and usually when they were on sale.

Meh

Might give this a miss. GTA4 was disappointing and clearly held back by the storage limitations of the Xbox360. PS3 owners were yet again gimped by the result of Microsoft's bad decisions from 2005.

Seems like little has changed at Rockstar, and they will continue to hold the PS3 and PC versions backs...

where have you heard that there'll be some exclusivity around the Xbox release this time? i've google'd but all i see are rabid fan "predictions" from 6 months ago.

And PC gamers have had their games gimped since 2007 because of the PS3 and 360. Such is life...

I was a rabid GTA fan boy but IV put pay to that. It's not that the game was bad but it wasn't true to the GTA lineage of bigger badder and more ridiculous. Bailing a jeep out of the back of a cargo jet however, is pure GTA! Soon as I have confirmation that the annoying, friends phoning you up to whine mechanic is gone, I will put in my preorder.

Of course, I might be willing to put up with incessant friend nagging if the combine harvester mission gets included again.

Yeah, but will it be *fun*? GTA IV was graphically impressive (for the time) but ultimately it was pretty tedious.

Bring back the nonsense and absurdity - the daft driving challenges, the base jumping and aircraft stunts, the "drive it off that cliff just to see what happens" feel.

Yes!!!!

I really hope there are vast open areas to explore in this game. It's what made GTA:SA better than IV in my opinion, the free roaming, and the wilderness. Many a time I would just jump on a chopper, put K:ROSE on the radio and go for a nice scenic bike ride through the desert, no beating prostitutes to death, no killing of innocent folk, just sticking to the road listening to the radio (ok, sometimes I'd treat myself to a thrill by going offroad, but I'd be very careful not to damage the bike!)

Ditto

Also racing around the perimeter of the map was fun, easiest on a police bike with sirens wailing but it still took a good ten minutes a lap.

That enormous unlocked map in GTA5 is ringing my bell.

in the real world cities arent just copied and pasted and lots of places look different.

anyway, i still get lost in my home town sometimes. i do enjoy getting lost in GTA though. especially after killing a couple of copper and having some squad cars on your tail.

Because of their compact nature I always felt that the GTA cities seemed less copy and pasted than real life cities.

They've avoided the row after row of identical terraced houses and countless tedious acres of monotonous housing estates which blight most cities.

All I ask if for Rockstar to not fuck this up by running all the online play through Windows Live again.

Oh please, please Rockstar, for all that is holy.
