EFF warns of ACTA redux
America’s Electronic Frontier Foundation is warning that Canada and Europe are in talks to copy-paste the criminal provisions of the notorious ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) into a new treaty called CETA. With the multi-lateral ACTA stumbling towards an unmarked grave, the world’s copyright enforcers appear to have …
Is it never over?
Do we have to kill every single bureaucrat, their orbiting lobbyists and the boards of the crony-capitalist companies financing the same before we can have peace?
You have to admit that Lenin had the correct solutions to some problems. Just add bullets.
Oh, okay, back to writing protest letters then.
Re: Is it never over?
All the busybodies are occupying themselves in drafting, editing and negotiating these treaties - SOPA, ACTA, and now CETA. See, they even package it up into little acronyms that make it easy to rally against them. In short, this doesn't stand a chance of getting anywhere, but keeps everyone busy. Copyright organizations, their lobbyists, the government stooges, lawyers - every one pretends to be doing something for their money and good thing too. You wouldn't want those people anywhere near things where they could do some actual damage.
Re: Is it never over?
We all knew something like this was in the air as soon as ACTA tanked.
Mind, with ACTA still relatively fresh in mind, it should be pretty easy to call public attention to this particular shenanigan.
Democracy in action, if it fails in one motion, just copy it into the small print of another motion that has little to do with the first one and wait for it to pass into law unnoticed.
I'm sure Orlowski is jizzing himself.
Where the hells Ottotwa?
We're used to less educated Americans getting it wrong, there's no excuse for the British.
wha?
"Europe asking Canada to implement protections beyond what the EU is able to implement."
Why is Europe asking Canada it implement things they themselves won't?
Presumably...
they are "things" that are illegal in the EU.
Re: wha?
Only reason I can think of is that if Canada passes it would make it easier to in the US. Then the EU can say well we don't have a choice.
Re: wha?
Clearly someone is sucking on a US teat.
The US keeps trying to get Canada to copy US crap laws like the DCMA and support their crap patents on drugs and "living organisms".
You can't kill this crap, it just comes back with a new name.
" generics peak bodies on both sides warn that CETA would delay the release of their products."
Pun intended? :)
It's real simple
Japan has it figured out and it's real simple. Pirates get a hefty fine and mandatory two years in prison. Facilitators of piracy get a minimum mandatory 10 years in prison and a huge fine.
This punishment should be adopted world wide and uniformly so that there is no argument or negotiations. You pirate and you pay. You facilitate and you pay.
End of story.
BTW, the EFF can go pound salt.
Re: It's real simple
Only if prescription drugs are covered under the same patent time-frames. I personally think the 'generic drug market' is a crock of shit. Also, if a company is found guilty, everyone in the company, including the attorneys and CxOs pay the fine and serve the time.
If you're going to be draconian, don't stop halfway.
vulnerabilities
the world’s copyright enforcers appear to have shifted strategy towards bilateral agreements – in other words, implementing piecemeal what groups like WIPO had hoped could be achieved at a stroke.
This seems an awful lot like cross-site scripting.
Oi Boris S, you numpty, haven't you noticed the pirates _buy more stuff_ than anyone else? The copyright protectionists just can't see past the end of their snouts.
