    This has been tried...

They tried this back in 2001, and it was a dismal failure, because Aussie IT shops do not want to train or develop their staff.

It's a cultural issue in Australia, that they want someone they don't have to do any training.. they can plonk them in a chair, and expect them to do it.

Oh, and they really don't want to pay market rates.

The skills gap that Australian businesses whine about is a myth. It's the fact they don't want to pay market rates.

40K/ year in places like Sydney and Melbourne is not enough to live, and if you do a quick google search, an almost unskilled Lvl1 IT job is going for closer to 45k right now.

    Govt fail.

So glad I moved to Canada

Do try and pay attention. This isn't 'govt wants private IT shops to train apprentices' .. This is 'Govt is accepting IT apprenticeships .. in govt IT departments.

"So glad I moved to Canada"

Seems that you raised the average IQ of both countries.

How does that differ to anywhere else. The vast majority of job rejection letters I get essentially say "we are only prepared to employ somebody who is already doing the job".

So it all comes down to how much better you can lie on your application than the other applicants.

    Really?

A Career Development and Support Officer oversees apprentices' progress and aims to ensure they emerge as “a high performing Australian Government employee.”

wow... they will be the only one of the current government then!

"Aussie Labour party.. aim and achieve mediocraty!"

That's not too bad -- mining companies are offering similar wages for experienced IT staff, Queensland FIFO.

If the Gov also finds a shortage of staff at that wage, for sure they can make it a migration target group.
