back to article Russia hands out 4G licences in an instant

The Russian regulator has skipped over all that auction nonsense to award 4G licences to the four network operators, denying licences to three others, but then Russia has had 4G for years. The state-owned Rostelecom got one licence, surprising no one, and the other three went to Russia's Big Three mobe operators – MTS, Vimpelcom …

4G in Southwark?

Why Southwark? Nokia's gone.

Yes but in Russia business is done differently. Disagree and you get shot, fail to pay and you get shot, insult Putin you get poisoned, speak out of turn, you get shot, have all your assets confiscated by the state and taken from and you get shot, don't pay the bribe, you get shot, don't suck up to the leadership you get shot.

Re: Blah

May I ask my fellow AC what his or her experience is in doing business in Russia?

All that getting shot business sounds like my fellow AC might be confusing Russia with a certain other, oppressive, superpower.

Backwards country, not

It's funny how easy it is to look at Russia as a backwards country and yet these kinds of articles prove that is is definately not the case. ( Well at least for Moscow.)

Re: Backwards country, not

It's heading back to communism gradually.

While you think they just handed out licences I'm pretty sure there were lots of backhanders and bribery going on. It's one of the most corrupt countries on the planet.

"See Putin, it can be done Should we be surprised that an autocracy can move with such efficiency... .... crowley Posted Thursday 12th July 2012 17:46 GMT

Er, do you really mean, meritocracy, crowley? Or is that too uncomfortable a notion of our exotic eastern neighbours in that it would conflict with that which is being pimped in the west of them.

For supposed democracies to doggedly stick with systems inefficiency is the madness which currently plagues and infects them and renders to them their present collaping machine, and a people growing wiser by the minute and more aware of the problem and it root causes, and those responsible for those problems, make it an explosive mix with IT Control an enabling catalyst/precursor or magic wand that takes all those troubles away.

Re: See Putin, it can be done

If by "Meritocracy" you mean "Whoever Putin wants to give a positive merit to", then sure, Russia is a Meritocracy. Anyone who disagrees gets arrested or hounded out of the country and their assets repossesed, but anyone who plays gets the nearly unlimited benefits* his patrionage brings.

*As long as that benefit you want is to run the country - but he will let you pretend to run the country when the constitution doesn't allow him to do it officially.

Auction

Of course there was an auction. It just happened without any of that annoying publicity or transparency, on Putin's yacht...
