Samsung and SK Hynix shares slide on Apple snub
Shares in Samsung have fallen over 6 per cent on news that Apple preferred to place huge chip orders with bankrupt firm Elpida Memory. It was reported in Taiwan yesterday that Apple had booked up half of the mobile DRAM capacity at Elpida's plant in Hiroshima for future iPhones and iPads. Despite the multiple patent battles …
just goes to show
The influence Apple have in this market.
Wasn't it Steve Jobs dream to design and build it all in house?
I thought the elipator was going for a song, maybe apple should bake their own chips.
Couple of things
Firstly, aside from the iPod touch, every product line they have increases sales about 10% a quarter, so it may well be that this contract just reflects that increased requirement and ongoing purchases with the other manufacturers will remain the same.
Secondly, keeping a third manufacturer afloat is good news for everyone except the other two players.
Re: Couple of things
Yep, I'm sure that was on Apples mind. Probably also got a very good price since from Elpida. Wouldn't be surprised is Apple drop's $10 bill to build a new fab for someone to make sure ARM stays competitive with Intel's latest tech.
Re: Couple of things
to make sure ARM stays competitive
The article is about DRAM not CPUs. Utter Fail. Go straight back to school, do not pass go and do not collect shiny new gadget.
Thats whats happens when you deside to pee of the fruity one too much!
Maybe Apple should buy them and start competing against Samsung in that space too =)
Screwing your customers has never looked so funny.
