back to article Scientists plan 3D printable robots for the home

A team of academics has won a $10m grant for a five-year project to develop robots that can be designed and manufactured by anyone within 24 hours. “Our goal is to develop technology that enables anyone to manufacture their own customized robot. This is truly a game changer,” said Professor Vijay Kumar, who is leading the team …

Asimov's little known Fourth Law...

...4. A robot is no bloody good unless it can make and deliver a decent cup of tea.

Re: Asimov's little known Fourth Law...

I was joking, Mahatma.

Lyuben Dilov added a fourth law, and Nikola Kesarovski added a fifth.

Harry Harrison pitched in with another fourth law about a decade later.

A toast to all who came before us :-)

"A toast to all who came before us "

We'd better modify that fourth law to include something a little more alcoholic than tea then...

What's this thing that's appeared in the printer overnight?

Ooooh, loook, it's a horse! I wonder what's inside it?

What kind of DRM are these robots going to have?

I don't want a robot that's going to laser me in the crotch every time I can't authenticate myself.

Not Penn State

"... the goal for the team from Harvard, Penn State and MIT ..."

The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) is not the same as Pennsylvania State University (Penn State).

Bah, old news

Lego mindstorms has been doing this for more than a decade. Except the 3D printing bit, you have to do that by hand.

"Kiss my shiny metal ass"

as the robots that hop from the DMLS machine will say before making their way to the couch to drink all your beer…

WTF?

Tunnel envisaging?

"They envisage local 3D printing workshops, where anyone could come in, pick an off the shelf robot design, customize it on-screen to suit the task at hand and then have it printed and assembled in the shop for pickup or delivery."

Or maybe (just maybe) they could stay at home and use...ooh I dunno... some futuristic new information-super-origami-highway thingy to pick a robot via a web page and have it delivered. Sheesh!

Pathetic!

$10,000,000 for '3D' printing of 'robots'??? It's not even 3D printing, it's bloody 2D printing which someone has folded along the dotted lines and glued a circuit board on. You might as well just ring the geek who works at Maplins circuit component section and ask him to solder one of the maze solving robot kits up they have, and you'd actually have a proper robot rather than paper animatronics, and it would cost 0.0001% of the cost of this so far.

What a con, Vijar, i salute your most excellent blag of 10mil USD, the BOFH woud be pleased.
