Filmmakers lit up the world of extreme sports this week with footage of a pro snowboarder in an LED light suit, gliding through snow in the dead of night. Fashion photographer and director Jacob Sutton took to the slopes of Tignes in south-eastern France with snowboarder William Hughes to create this dazzling piece of art, …
shot on a Red Epic at a minimum 2K frame size
yet only available to watch on YouTube at 480p?
Re: shot on a Red Epic at a minimum 2K frame size
The Red is a good camera for extreme sports and all kinds of situations where jiggery-pokery with the speed or /a posteriori/ zoom might be needed (because it is fast and high-res), but doesn't deal partularly well with difficult light conditions (mostly because, well, it is fast and high-res). That might explain why they choose to show the result of this particular shoot in thumbnail format...
He's not the stig...
... but he is the Stig's radioactive cousin!
Re: He's not the stig...
Upvote, since you beat me to it and it would be silly to say it again.
Now to hand it over to our tame racing driver...
Some say.... he glows in the dark...
Looks pretty sweet, but I reckon the colour changing snowboards are cooler:
This guy made one with accelerometers etc so that as the angle changes, so does the colour.
Unfortunately I dont see any freestyle footage, something like a rodeo 540 (Backflip with a 180) would look soooo cool as it cycled through the colours.
The music sounds vaguely familiar but I can't place it.
Soundhound didn't recognise it either?
Would someone care to enlighten me?
(IT? as in 'what is it?')
That's all sorts of pretty
Every winter we film a (skate)boarding line or two in the dark with either LEDs or, more amusingly, fire on the boards or spots. It always looks cool, but now methinks this year we may have to try a little harder.
Well done, those men, well done. Colour me inspired.
Waste of money
Couldn't you have a much cheaper version of the same effect, by inverting the colours on a normal video?
Re: Waste of money
My first thought was it looks like an over exposed black and white negative.
you wouldn't necessarily have the light coming through the snow clouds.
Looks like the output of an IR camera to me.
Just go snowboarding in skimpy undies...
"The sole source of lighting was the LED suit, created in roughly 300 hours by designer John Spatcher."
300 Hours for wrapping a suit in a chain of LEDs sounds a bit steep, but then again it was done by a designer.
Give the suit to a pile of "Makers" and in 6 hours you could have had a suit not only wrapped in LEDs, but it would have had a GPS tracking movement speed, an accelerometer measuring turning force and the suit could have changed colour based on speed with "hot" flashes of colour when turning.
A veritable L.E.D. Storm ....
Very Very Cool
But makes we went to get back up the mountain :'(
Only just got back and me wants ti ga shreddin' some more.
Starting at 0:41, I could hear the voice of every 'boarder I know saying, "Get outta the trees, STUPID." Tree runs aren't for "professionals", they're for people who don't like living.
(Or it could be I'm just frustrated because the snow here in the Sierras has been lousy all season; it's been a damn dry year..)
That's a Red alright.
The suit is completely burnt at all times and anything else is barely visible at all. That's a Red alright. Nice idea though; but certainly not the right camera for the job.
I am *not* going to speculate..
.. where he keeps the batteries.
I *knew* I shouldn't have read that "digital toys" review first..
Gays on trays.. prefer being a prick with sticks myself.
Now and Again
Someone has been watching re-runs of "A girl's life" where Mr Newman wears the light suit.
Or really old ep BSG stuff.

"Get outta the trees, STUPID."
Yeah. In the dark. With your night vision screwed up by your illuminated suit.
This looks shopped
I can tell from the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
nothing new. Some Welsh sheep farmer did that with a bunch of sheep. Pretty amusing when the dog got going.
One for the teenagers this.
Looks like somebody's had their Ready-Brek this morning.
