US space agency NASA has released a new video of the back side of the Moon, filmed by its newly-arrived duo of GRAIL lunar probe craft. Here it is: Arriving in lunar orbit as the human race welcomed in the New Year here on Earth, the twin Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) craft's primary mission is to work …
I'm sure I saw Elvis's house, the no 7 London bus and the missing WW2 bomber.
Where was the Monolith? I clearly saw it in that previous footage. Also what happened to Richard Strauss' music?
The Paris angle? Her backside will never look that rugged. :)
Richard Strauss? Pink Floyd Shirley!
It was the Tycho Magnetic Anomoly, which was on near side near clavius (as I recall, very sadly)
Why did my old school not have such cool projects? Really nice way to get kids into science, or rather keep kids in science, as from a young age they seem interested in anything, and only later, when the "snobbery of indifference" sets in in puberty, do many seem to lose interest.
Nice one, NASA!
Sounds like you own a teenager too.
But I am building them a mini-Dobsonian telescope (and they are helping me build it). I somehow do not think keeping them interested is going to be that hard, because they are showing promising signs of nerdiness already. Nerds are interested in things for their own sake, not just because other people think it is cool.
Good for you!
Always good to have more nerds in the house.
When did tags start to work on the Reg forum?
Are they <i>HTML<i> or [i]BBCode[/i] or something else?
Re: When did tags start to work on the Reg forum?
We will be rolling out limited html formatting over the next couple of weeks.
You will get <em>, <i>, <b> <strong>, <strike> to play with.
We'll set the bar a bit higher for html linkage.
a disturbing lack of crashed Autobot ships or shifty Decepticons...... what do you mean it was only a movie?
Everyone knows the Ark crashed in Oregon, not on the Moon.
Was I the only one to be disappointed not to see a massive amusing arse shaped crater?
> massive amusing arse shaped crater
You are thinking of the butt on Mercury; it's less well known than the face on Mars.
...In order to hide the nazi moonbase!
Coffee not kicked in yet Lewis?
"ENORMOUS BACKSIDE" - come on El Reg ... some many possibilities and that's the best you can do?
This expression no doubt comes from here.
Only last month we came across a moon which was shaped exactly like Felicity Kendall's bottom.
We flew around that one a couple of times.
What no footage of the moon landing sites? Oh of course, this probe isn't flying above a hanger in America.
They didn't land on the dark side
"There is no dark side of the moon... matter of fact, it's all dark."
The FAR side
There is no dark side. The Moon is not the Force.
Can't see videos at work...
Its almost like viewing a video of a large arse is not safe for work.
That's No Moon!
Did anybody's eye get hit? Like a big pizza pie?
Had this been a Russian craft it may have been caught between the moon and New York City - for a while at least. I know it's crazy!
Is it only me seeing this??
Look at the bottom crater right at the end of the clip. Is that a huge plane sat in the middle of it!!??
No, I see it too!
Please stay where you are so I can locate you and beam you up for a discussion of our discovery.
Are you sure this isn't a picture of the clanger's home world?
Looks far more like it than our side, which suggests Oliver Postgate was either prescient or a space traveller.
Actually the latter might explain a lot.
There is no dark side of the moon really...
Go look at the Youtube comments for that video. They are hilarious.
There's always a dark side of the moon...
...it just moves :p
... one day there could be a nearby supernova in the direction of the moon's dark side.
Unless said supernova illuminated the dark side to the exact same degree as the sunny side (and I'm talking to the PHOTON), then one side would still be darker than t'other.
Stick that in your pipe!
Anyone else think...
... that the prism shaped Grail mission logo needs a beam of white light coming in from the bottom left and a spectrum coming out from the right hand side...?!
Need to add a soundtrack
Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon" of course!!
Also, considering all that glare and the top of the moon at the start of the video, I was half expecting to see the Monolith go flying by!
