Germany opens cyberdefence centre to protect water, electricity
Germany today launched its new cyberdefence facility in Bonn, dedicated to defending the country's critical infrastructure, including its electricity and water supply. The facility is believed to be the first of its kind in Europe. The Cyber-Abwehrzentrum in Bonn is located in a securely fenced office block of the Federal Office …
I think I smell the next bubble....
*Rushes out to get cheap MSc in IT Security*
The only way...
...they can protect that infrastructure is if they try to hack it, probe for vulnerabilities and then report back what they found to the private industry owners.
Will they be forthcoming if those hack attempts actually prompt a disaster and own up to the responsibility?
This be bad medicine.
Alternatively
They can just disconnect the stuff from the Internets...
Cue the inevitable..
...protestation of innocence from China.
I still don't get it though
Why would you invest millions in (for example) securing your nuclear reactor site/other critical infrastructure, have armed security, bio-identity checks on entry, and then put the reactor controls where they can be accessed by script kiddies on the internet.
I mean why ffs?
Wonder how the recruits will be drilled...
"Mueller! You are late. Az punishment you shall compile the linux kernel twenty times!"
"And if you are late again
You must produce useful comments in the code."
Hmmm...
"and the attacks often originated from foreign sources"
633 Squadron, 617 Squadron and most yanks were unavailable for comment.
Nuclear? What Nuclear?
If the germans want to protect their electricity supply, they don't need to worry about IT security, they need to worry about kneejerk politicians shutting down all their powerplants.
