back to article Apple bags iCloud.com domain for $4.5m, says report

Apple has reportedly bought the iCloud.com domain name for $4.5m. According to Gigaom's Om Malik, who cites a source familiar with Sweden-based former iCloud.com owner Xcerion, the transaction took place recently. To add fuel to the rumour, Xcerion's storage-as-a-cloud service recently morphed into a new domain name of CloudMe. …

d'oh!

Nice one Xcerion - sell Apple iCloud, but make sure you've got CloudMe first :)

I bet the Execs at Apple are kicking themselves now for not registering it BEFORE they bought iCloud

How long

before Apple are going after Iran and Iraq, 'scuse me, iRan and iRaq. Surely the countries involved still using those names must be an abomination to the Church of Jobs. iRan could revert to using Persia, and personally I think Mesopotamia is a much nicer name than iRaq anyway.

Big Potatoes

Kinda puts the $375k that the BBC paid Boston Business Computing for bbc.com into perspective, doesn't it?

I seem to remember that The Reg got a bit hot-under-the-collar about that story a few years ago. Ah, yes, here it is:

Might be worth revisiting that story now, maybe?

With or without Playmobil re-enactments.

3 letter domain

Even for 2005 for a 3 letter domain name owned by another company thats really good value, although I can't say I could afford that myself.

Hmmm

I think I'm going to register iGod.com before Steve Jobs founds the Apple religion.

WTF?

But why?

They've already got me.com. Ok, no the pun wasn't intended.

Even so, millions on a domain that is less memorable. For something that extends what mobileme is about?

Rather expensive redirect.

Thumb Down

Not sure I believe this

iCloud doesn't seem to gel with Apple's naming philosophy somehow. Apple is all about the user experience, not about the underlying tech. iCloud is an underlying-tech-based name.

we shall see.

yeah but...

... dontcha think that 'iPad' is just a little bit about the underlying tech as well - sorta/kinda/maybe??

And really - who knows what 'cloud' really means anyway?

To me its just a 'back to the future' return to my mainframe days as a student. The 'User Experience' is completely untouched by the tech and what you percieve to be the experience is solely the domain of the delivery mode, (browser, thin client or SaaS service portal)...

"registering domains with i + generic names"

'ihoover' is not a generic name - Hoover is a brand. The generic name would be 'ivacuum'.... which I don't, because I am a bloke, and its wimmins work.
