back to article Three pushes UNLIMITED data to PAYG punters

Three today extended its unlimited - no, honest - data package to pay-as-you-go customers, who can now gobble up as much content as they like for £15 a month. Last year, the network operator introduced The One Plan, a pay-monthly eat-all-you-can data package that eclipsed the claimed-to-be-unlimited-but-not deals of its …

I could use this.

Already got close to the 2gb limit once on their £5 deal due to youtubing on the bus in the mornings. Plus 300 minutes? Methinks I know what package I'm getting next month.

Also, the Rate Article and Post Reply links are way too close together on a 7" toyslab. I didn't mean to give this article 1/10, honest!

nearly there...

...but giffgaff still beats "3", albeit narrowly (unlimited vs 3000 SMS) on the £15, hammers them (1500 vs 500 minutes) for £25. Must try harder and I don't think I'll be trading in my old 3PAY SIM.

Of course, in half of the country O2 forgot to install any 3G towers in, unlimited at GPRS speeds isn't worth using. And maybe this will finally force giffgaff to allow tethering, the other big advantage with "3".

Going to be a fun few weeks waiting for the response over at giffgaff ;)

3000 texts

100 a day or thereabouts.

If ANYONE even gets close to using those up they are a SAD MUPPET.

Just thought I would mention it.

Or you could use GiffGaff

GiffGaff on PAYG will sell you a minutes/text/data bundle of 150 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data (which they mean) for £10 a month. Sure, you can't tether with it (or use it in an iPad), but...

GG 1-UKP bundle

is 250 minutes call time

unlimited texts

unlimited data

I managed to use maybe 100 minutes last month and scheduled another 10UKp goody bag

for the same bundle for March.

Also their support is just brilliant.

The same droid phone (ZTE racer) eat 1UKP/HOUR when I had a VF sim inside - I am sure VF was "eating" credit when phone was off/battery removed! now remind me which US carrier was it that was caught out charging PAYG based not upon usage but upon phone model?

title

The GG £10 bundle is for 150mins, but they are currently running a promo giving 100 extra = 250. At the end of the month that drops back to 150.

I would be curious to know if the three deal allows tethering. It's one thing GG don't allow at the moment.

giffgaff

giffgaff trumps this with 300 minutes, unlimited internet and unlimited texts for £15 or 1500 minutes for £25.

Only real drawback is that you have to put up with O2 for network coverage

Nice offer, shame 3 don't offer unlimited access to the internet.

If I point my browser at b3ta.com or cracked.com, 3 try to sell me porn. Nothing says "we want to protect the children" like dangling porn in front of them.

Change your APN

Change your APN to 3internet and you'll overcome that restriction. This works on a contract, no idea about pre-pay.

3internet! Thanks Andrew!!

Awesome cheers for that Andrew, just tried it on contract and worked perfectly.

Hmm. Never looked at cracked.com before. It does have some entertaining links. This one is probably NSFW, and perhaps NSFTC...

better than giffgaff

I got my SIM two days ago and have since found out that you can't use BBC iPlayer with it; apparently it's only 3 and Vodaphone which can.

Steam doesn't appear to work either.

(I use my phone as a wireless hotspot for the PC)

Erm...

If you are using your phone as a wireless hotspot for the PC, you are breaking GiffGaff's T's & C's. Don't be surprised if you get booted.

Orange

My last month's data useage was over 11gb... at a change of about £30 from Orange, on top of the £17.50 a month contract for 200 mins and unlimited texts, of which I used about 10 mins and 50 texts.

Only in contract for another 8 months...

Not on my sim

My3 tells me that £15 gets me 3000 texts, 300minutes, and 500Mb of broadband.

re. "..allows tethering.."

My Android 2.2 phone acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot, so I can 'tether' my laptop or netbook and connect to the internet using my Tesco 1-month contract SIM (a measly 500MB a month).

Surely it's the phone that 'allows' tethering and it's nothing to do with the mobile data service operator. Even if it was, why should they care what you do with the data as long as you stay within the contract allowance?

Just wondering.

T&C

On GiffGaff, the T&C's state that tethering is not allowed. This is because they offer unlimited usage, but only from a phone. Let's face it, a phone is not going to be easily able to download as much as a PC. They are quite happy for you to do whatever you want from your mobile, not imposing any caps. It is unreasonable for them to allow you to use it as a replacement for home broadband.

3 coverage

Some people mentioned GiffGaff's coverage being on O2, and that being bad. Personally, where I live, I agree and disagree.

I had been with Three pretty much since launch and I promoted them to friends and family based on my good experience with them.

I get next to no 3G coverage through GiffGaff round and about where I live and work (Lincolnshire) but I get solid 2G coverage, quite often EDGE. I was with Three PAYG but left them after they dropped 2G backup leaving huge swathes of the county without any signal. This was after protracted 'customer service' from their Executives Office who promised my phones unlock code for weeks on end but never phoned back until I really started to have a go at them. They all-but admitted over the phone that they aren't bothered about you if you live outside of a major city.

I know it is horses for courses, but I'd rather have virtually total coverage rather than a phone that only works when I am at home (have a landline for that...)

GiffGaff's offers are great and I am 100% happy to have joined them from Three. After the abysmal customer service I got from Three, I wouldn't go back now if they paid me.

erm virgin not unlimited it's fair use is 3000 so it's the same

RE last sentence:

If 3000 texts aren't sufficient, there's always Virgin's unlimited texts Sim-only offering, but you won't get the such a large data allowance. ®

It's not Virgin is subject to 3000 fair use so it's the same allowance with less data.. 3 trumps a virgin...

fnah fnah ... Paris cause she's had many 3s and is no virgin...

All you can eat, but...

...Your connection gets throttled down to a snail's pace once you go over 1GB usage.

...You also get billed at 10p/MB if they deem your use data of to be non-personal

Oh, and there's the 36 pages of Terms & Conditions to allow them to wriggle out of any commitments you feel that they may owe you through their marketing - all this neatly formatted onto two A4 printable pages into in a 2-point fontsize:

http://www.three.co.uk/_standalone/Link_Document?content_aid=1220457053001

... and remember they won't show these full T&C's in the store when they ask to sign on the dotted line - the form states that the "full T&C's of this contract are available to be viewed on our website".

new to PAYG 3G what do i do

"Three pushes UNLIMITED data to PAYG punters"

"£15 pack gives customers 30 days of unlimited data"

so let's got this right, im new to PAYG 3G

i can walk in to a shop and ask for a PAYG Three SIM and a generic USB stick (at what cost ?) to put it in, take it home and plug it into the PC,laptop or whatever, enter a thing in your software "Change your APN" ? (what too and where do you get this info per operator/vendor ?), and be up and running within seconds , is that right, total cost is including the USB 3G stick to put it in ?,

i dont care about the other calls and SMS crap stuff, only real unlimited data from a usb connected 3G stick laptop PC
