back to article Indonesia puts RIM on two-week notice

Indonesian politicians are calling for RIM to provide lawful intercept and porno blocking, within two weeks, or face losing contact with the 1.5 million BlackBerry users in the country. RIM has leapt to say that it would be delighted to do the latter, in the hope that its commitment will distract attention from the former …

question

why is the internet access on the BlackBerry routed through RIM's servers?

I understand that in the case of the email, the servers access the email and forward it to the device. But the internet access, shouldn't that handle by the local ISP or local mobile operator?

I can only imagine how much traffic RIM will have to re-route once they launch their tablet!

my guess

"why is the internet access on the BlackBerry routed through RIM's servers?"

I don't know for sure but my guess would be that it works something like the Opera mobile system. The server compresses the html and resizes the images to save on expensive mobile bandwidth costs and speed up webpage load times.

Latency due to distance

You can't speed the load times up when the latency due to distance is extremely high.

WTF?

It's a funny setup

My gmail app on my BB accesses my account from a UK RIM server. That appears to be the route from BB to corporate BES through proxy to RIM server *somewhere*.

What's more amusing is 19th century laws bringing a 20th century approach to a 21st century problem. It's all a bit too Clare Swales for me.....

Hello, Title

"getting governments to recognise the limitations inherent in its architecture."

Making emails uninterceptible is a highly desirable feature of the architecture, and most certainly NOT a limitation.

When will service providers grow a "Pair"????

It is LONG past time that all Internet & Telco service providers grew a "pair" and said no to the unreasonable/illegal demands of Totalitarian Regimes/Governments in general.

If you don't like what is on the Internet, please go back to the stone age, where your porn was painted on cavewalls.

If you can't stand the fact that someone can speak/communicate freely and securely via the Internet then as you brits say "Piss Off!" Back to the stone age for you miserable shortsighted despots.

The real reason ANY governments have for controlling the Internet/Information, is to prevent their people from eventually unseating them. All other reasons are lies.

Let's go one step further than "Piss Off!".

I say provide 1024 bit unbreakable encryption with no back door for all types of services - email, RSS, Web, Chat, Twitter, etc.

Unleash this EVERYWHERE TO EVERYONE FOR FREE. (Now there's a good project for white hat hackers)

Then tell all governments that NOTHING will be censored any longer and if they try to take down a service or block information, the offending country/dictator/thieving bastard will be cut off from all forms of communication FOREVER.

I predict that the offending country and/or government will collapse within months (Exception North Korea, they can't miss what they never had). The only way to be reinstated is to hang the offending politicians publicly as a message to the rest.

As to the icon, true satire is difficult to tell from strange truth. Can we have black helicopters under the joke alert?

how about

Putting the local server in as they have asked for. and when everyone shifts to their own BES turn round and say well we told you so. they have complied with the request, just that the users havent.

anyone who wants to hide something enough will always be a step ahead

'Skin' affectionados needs met by visiting ...

Glodok, part of Jakarta Old Town, also known as Pecinan or Chinatown. I saw numerous shops selling DVD's featuring lurid pornography.

The 'catalogues' only contain DVD covers. When you make a selection either a cell call or a runner will result in the affectionado receiving his satisfaction after a few minutes. You'd be surprised just how many 'liberal' Muslim viewers there are!

UK mobile censorship not just pornography

The censorship of the internet by mobile operators is not restricted to pornography. It actually applies to anything which anybody might just possibleyby any stretch of imagination take exception to and find an excuse to label as pornographic. There is little transparency, less accountability and no effective means of appeal. It makes a joke of free speech.

The censorship may make some adults feel better but the research evidence shows that the censorship is so simplistic that it does a lot more harm than good. Even those advocating greater censorship admit that there is little or no evidence to back their demands. For example MP Claire Perry at the end of Panorama yesterday.

Try Googling for "briefing notes british naturism" and look at the links for "Censorship" and "Health and Well Being".
