4chan hit by DDoS assault
Controversial image board 4chan came under a denial of service attack on Tuesday. A status message on 4chan's status boards (below) reported that the birthplace of anonymous and home of midget porn had joined the "ranks of MasterCard, Visa, PayPal" as victims of a denial of service attack. Site is down due to DDoS. We now join …
Grrr.
Dear 'patriot hackers', 'Tits or GTFO' and DDoS someone else.
To misquote Johnson, Patriotism is the last vestige of the wanker.
Could The Reg run a BAWW thread and post a picture of Boxxy to keep us going?
Inbe4 the Daily Mail readers start gloating.
Misquote or misunderstand
"To misquote Johnson, Patriotism is the last vestige of the wanker"
When Johnson said that patriotism was the last resort of a scoundrel he did not mean that patriots were scoundrels. What he meant was that patriotism was the fallback position of the scoundrel. He could have said: All else having failed the scoundrel will rely on patriotism.

Skynet might be Sci-Fi, but we're only one step away fom autonomous Botnets that learn new targets based on who attackes them.
Boooooom!
Why "patriot"?
I am sure a lot of people think that supporting wikileaks case is patriotic, (i.e. good for their country as it brings more honesty and transparency). For these people, supporting "oppressive administration" and "pigopolists" would be quite *un*patricotic. One's personal opinion on the matter non-withstanding, surely calling one side "patriotic" is not right, is it?
@Eugene Crosser
That is what they think they are. They think that attacking someone who is supporting democratic and constituional accountability is actually their patriotic duty.
It may well be nationalist - if your nation is the few dozen people who control our supposedly elected leaders. It is not patriotic for the countries of the USA and its 'friends' or the people in them.
Incidentally, I came accross a new word on the BBC website last night. "wikisqueak - the noise a diplomat makes when they realise that the message they just sent was unencrypted". I will be using that one...
@Spanners
I saw that list too, can't find the address to bill the Beeb for my keyboard though!
I read 'Fidgetal' and thought of someone I know!
The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.
"4chan's boards were reachable on Wednesday but full of "link spam" to porn sites".
As opposed to?
FFS!
There is more to 4chan than /b/
Why must people still refer to the whole of 4chan as being some sort of web anarchy zone.
The trifle is required and must contain berries and/or tidbits
Pissing in an ocean of piss, etc...
"Why must people
"Why must people still refer to the whole of 4chan as being some sort of web anarchy zone."
I can't see that it really matters. A web community - any community, in fact - will find its reputation is based on the activities of its members. Unfortunately for 4chan, /b/ are by far its loudest.
The current state of affairs
makes one thing of two monkeys, one with an upper class British accent proclaiming
"Well of course we are going to throw poo!"
Poo = packets.. I'll stop torturing this metaphor now.
RE: The current state of affairs
Love the monkeys analogy! At least if the kiddiots are busy wasting each other the adults can get on with using the Web for real stuff (like WoW, Xbox Live, etc). BTW, did anyone point out to the script kiddies that the current "war" is just giving the NSA/FBI loads of intel on whom and what is being used by both sides?
4chan full of porn links?
Sounds like it's back to normal then.
Title nazis are on to me
..beat me to it.
If it hadn't been for cot'n eyed Joe..
FOAF secondhand info tells me
That allegedly, someone turned the LOIC tool to point to 4chan--likely 'for the lulz', as I heard it. Sounds rather like business as usual over there.
I heard (from a different source) that some rather less-than-intelligent netizens took this to mean that 'Anonymous was going to be tracked down and brought to justice'--if nothing else, this 'cyberwar' schtick is certainly good for bringing drama to the Unwashed.
@muninsfire
"Anonymous was going to be tracked down and brought to justice."
That's right. The cyber police and the state police have been called. They've all been back-traced and consequences will never be the same!
DDoS?
I think they were more concerned over the color scheme and background music
I managed to avoid the music...
Dunno why. Was browsing /b/ on a linux machine with Chromium, maybe that had something to do with it? Colors were still garish, and the content was the same (i.e. awful), but thankfully no 'Cotton Eye Joe'...
An exclusive club?
I don't think 4chan has cornered the market on stupidity just yet....
It's clear that they're already a member
...that they're already a member of the woefully deluded. Congratulations, 4Chan.
Again, John
Dont let the mail put words in your mouth, eh? 2nd time now, pack it in, there's a good chap.
this isn't news
4chan gets taken out by ddos every other week. It's usually done by pedos and scientologists, so if you're standing in the sidelines cheering this on, just be sure you know who your allies are.
@this isn't news
Seriously? "Paedophiles hate 4chan, therefore if you hate 4chan..."?
I always thought this was the sort of thing that got used as examples of what logic isn't.
I'm neither paedophile nor Scientologist, and I think 4chan are a bunch of attention-seeking kids, or grown-ups behaving like it. And Wikileaks is being exploited, and Assange is innocent until proven guilty, and Mastercard can do business, or not, with whomever they choose. And patriotism is at least as common an excuse as religion for self-serving idiocy.
Handbags at dawn ladies!
What a useless bunch of little t***pots!
"Oooh you pushed my friend! I'm pushing you back"! Grow up and do something useful with your lives instead of sitting in your basements "attacking" each other's cardboard forts!
cardboard forts
"attacking each other's cardboard forts" genius
Irony
The irony here is not of the "live by the sword" or "hoist by your own petard" type. It is that these people may be able to launch a DDOS attack, but they ain't nearly so clever as they might think they are if they can't defend against one.
Strange coincidences
At the same time, most file-sharing BBs were taken down by combinations of DDOS, SQL injections, and legal attacks, with BREN and ACAPOR (google them up) as some of the faces for the legal part of the attacks. Looks like the bad guys are now using the same tactics as the good guys, plus lawyers. Oh I probably mean the other way around. Minus lawyers. Depends on which side of the trenches you're on, MAFIAA and friends, or small time file sharers.
let's hope the FBI and ICE and others are working to protect 4chan
I assume the same FBI and ICE and everyone else that goes after DDOS'ers are hot on the trail of catching those attacking 4chan right?
Right?
Ha, yeah right.
Attack a banker = break the law.
Banker attacks you = they write the laws.
There are no patriot hackers....
.. but there is a government "computer warfare" department that's getting a lot of black funds via the US defense budget - and they have been waiting for just such an opportunity to flex their muscle and test drive their capabilities...
Patriotism
Patriotism is another form of fundamentalism. Just lacking the Sky-Fairy aspect.
"My Country, right or wrong."
