Masochists add Jimbo Wales to every webpage
A sadistic add-on developer is offering a Google Chrome extension that slaps those solipsistic Jimbo Wales Wikipedia banner ads on every other website across the net. And masochists are rapidly installing the thing. Since the extension debuted over the weekend, installs have topped 3,000. "I love it!!!" said one masochist. " …

incidentally, if you want to get rid of the ones on the wikipedia site, add this to your Adblock filter:
##div[class*="expanded"][id="centralNotice"]
I should add...
...the advert in the iPad version would be a lot easier on me. It's the whole "he's looking at me" thing. Especially since I usually sit around in front of the PC at home in old shorts and a very holey (not in the Catholic sense) old T-shirt. Dripping sweat - Australia is heating up just now and I am under a flat tin roof with no air-con. Nice sea breaze just starting to roll in for the evening, though. Need a nice cold drink from the fridge now.
Big thank you for that
Something about the WikiPedia ad with Jimbo's face really unnerves me.
And the fact that it always appears right between me deciding to click a link near the top of the page and my finger actioning that click is really irritating!
Both those things together were actually reducing my tendency to visit the site.
It seems that they wised up to this
The ad-block snippet doesn't work for me, I guess they changed the way it's presented.
That filter doesn't work for me...
...but this one does:
||wik*.org/w/index.php?title=*:BannerController
I was beginning to get sick of his stupid face.
Thanks for that
You brought tears to my eyes. Freezing in the dark arctic winter here. :(
Uhhhh...
You know there's a little 'X' in the top-right of the banner? And if you click it, they'll stop displaying?
Great solution
I have an easier one: click the "X" in the top left corner
does what it says in the tin
pasted-in and working within about 3 clicks, thanks
That one doesn't work for me either
Are the wikimasters changing the structure every time someone figures out how to filter it?
are you sure?
I just added
##div[class*="expanded"][id="centralNotice"]
and I still see those banners.
Depends...
If you're after a fight or out on the pull :-D
but isn't this tongue in cheek, rather?
And some comments on the dev page, really one can read them both ways :)
Mine is the one with the extensions hanging out ... thanks.
C.
One born every minute!
"Changed my life"
That would suggest to me that you would need to get one first!
Missing the tongue implanted in the cheek?
Then you may love the user reviews of this album:

I had assumed
that the statement was ironic (or just taking the piss)
Oh, jeezus, these reviews are frickin' high-larious...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Whole-World-Katie-Price-Peter/dp/B000JU8FXK/
I actually sampled some of the tracks on the album in question, and it made the reviews even funnier.
I especially liked this one, from "Dogboy73":
"The Reason God Gave Us Ears...
Who would have thought that the pairing of such massive tits & Peter Andre could result in such musical perfection? Are Peter & Katie the new Sonny & Cher? Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton? Mulligan & O'Hare? These may be cover versions of classic & somehwhat obvious tracks. But on listening you'd be forgiven for thinking that they were written especially for this most likely of couples. Tracks hand picked for a match made in Heaven. We were already fully aware of Peter's talents in this department but what of Katie's talents? She certainly has the lungs for belting out the hits but the emotion conveyed on these 'offerings' is somewhat overwhelming. The results throughout are hugely moving, warm, honest & genuine as together Peter & Katie murder their way through the course of this album..."
Needless to say, I hit Google to get a little background on these two and, sure enough, Katie is quite... uh, shall we say, "healthy".
wooosh
It's a very special kind of humour, not all understand.
Re: downright creepy
Ha! You can't spell !
(and yeah I like wikipedia - but this isn't the best way to avoid suspicion that a personality cult lurks not to0 far below the surface)
I agree with the OP
Jimbo (FFS) Wales is a complete cult.
In defence of this "addition"
The Jimmy Wales thing is more interesting than the fecking beatles on iTunes, fork me that is some boring shit not happening.
parroty error
I dont know if its very common, but the Uncyclopedia has been lampooning these banners since they started, they appear to have a suite of similar banners on their site
http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
god damn you to HELL, nobby...
http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
D'aahhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... oh, damn, I've wet 'em.
If you want to turn it off...
Log into wikipedia, select My Preferences, then the Appearance tab, and then choose "Custom CSS" in the entry next to your default skin, vector in my case.
Then enter -
#centralNotice {display:none !important;}
I have done this guilt free as I donate to wikipedia via monthly standing order.
I'd give W. money
I'd give Wikipedia some money if the leaders reined in the deletionists and took a laxer line on "notability".
Solipsistic?
How so? Is the implication that Jimbo suspects he is the only being to exist out there? If so, who is he advertising tp?
Psychology
Presumably he therefore thinks that we are all figments of his imagination, or voices inside his head? Advertising would then be a form of self-motivation or even auto-hypnosis.
But he's not the only being to exist out there. I am.
Is it possible?
That these people don't realise this banner is ONLY in their own Browser?
Do they think they are actually adding it to each site they visit?
Stranger things...
Are there pages that Mr. Wales would wish his "personal appeal" not to appear on?
Just wondering.

(And a couple that apparently I'm not allowed to look at)
It is insistent, does he go away if you cough up? But also it is part of the web site and you should not block it unilaterally. But that sort of goes for all site-based ads. Then again, what if you use no-images bo!rowsing?
Anyway, you may use
