Blogging site Tumblr was knocked offline on Monday by the denizens of 4Chan, which was briefly floored itself during a tit-for-tat dispute that has recently escalated into open hacking attacks by both sides. Users of 4chan came together to launch a denial of service attack against Tumblr in response to gripes that the site was …
Pictures of lolcatz in ur ovenz or weird midget porn?
Only one way to find out...
4Chan V Tumblr
It's Handbags and pompoms at Dawn...
*Grabs a bucker of popcorn*
This is gonna be fun...
What's a bucker?
Also; didn't Sarah ixnay the popcorn?
calm down, calm down
Bloody kids these days, I dunno.
Do I have this right?
Did 4chan attack Tumblr simply because they had fluffier kittens?
I'm just having a hard time understanding motive. Yeah, okay, Anonymous attacked the RIAA because they like to pirate and scientologists because they're just douchebags, but what's the grievance with Tumblr here?
Kinda looks to me like two savage tribes attacking each other because the other tribe "isn't like us."
Re: Do I have this right?
Nah, they didn't attack because they had fluffier kittens.
The thing to remember about 4chan (and to an extent Anonymous) is that they're not some group somewhere plotting to right the world's wrongs and become the next robin hood.
4chan is a bunch of people with too much time on their hands and a desire to provoke reactions. They didn't attack the RIAA because the RIAA is wrong... they did it because the RIAA annoyed them. A bunch of them didn't become anonymous and attack CoS to show the world the horrible wrongs the church does... they do it because it's fun.
Apparently attacking a site dedicated to fluffy (non-fluffer) kittens was seen as a source of amusement this week. Imagine the guys from the start of A Clockwork Orange if they couldn't indulge in personal activities but had to be limited to Internet actions.
I once watched them tear down a Black Pride forum
...for absolutely no good (IMO) reason whatsoever. They thought it was a lulzy target, so they invaded and got it kicked off their host for ToS violations. The raid on the Epilepsy Foundation comes to mind too.
It's a little like watching an ant hill from a distance - trying to apply logic to their movements is somewhat of a useless exercise and definitely... whatever you do... do not poke it with a stick!
'I'm just having a hard time understanding motive'
That's human nature for you, RIAA and the like are merely the enemy, Tumblr as competitors/heretics will always be hated more.
(As an aside, Rick Astley is at least a step up from goatse.)
Sounds like a pretty good description of 4chan to me.
The real reason for the 4chan/tumblr fracas
... is the allegation my Anonymous that tumblr users are "using 4chan memes". Seriously, that's it. It's been smouldering for weeks, this weekend it all got silly and DDoS tools were being bandied about on /b/ while tumblr users embarked on a brief campaign of flooding /b/ with new threads.
It's like the old school playground one school against another!
Although, I have a feeling that the little tykes at 4Chan will take it all a bit personally and probably end up doing more damage than the 'I can haz DDOS?' brigade.
...what will countless angst ridden emos/twilight drones/annoying self important teenagers do with themselves now?
Two sets of people kicking the shit out of each other for some absolutely pathetic reason?
Sounds like a perfectly normal human occupation to me, that of tribal war.
Bring a picnic, get a hilltop seat and enjoy the carnage!
= Low Orbit ION Cannon, not Low Orbit Internet Cannon
XCKD was there first
As proved: http://xkcd.com/591/
Hell hath no fury......
Like a geek scorned.
Panto season is coming soon ;o)
reminds of the age old joke,,
why is fighting on the internet like the special olympics?
Because even if you win, you're still retarded
Crips vs Bloods
It's just a classic gang turf-war for geeks. These are kids that want to belong somwhere, but would get their asses kicked in a real street gang... These memes that they claim ownership of are their gang colours and signs.. At least for now. Soon enough it will escalate. It's just a matter of time until innocent bystanders just tying to read their emails or get their daily fix of lolcats will be caught in the crossfire. Pretty soon no place will be safe from these hooligans. Organized cime will follow... They will get into the dealing of penis pills to minors and soon no subnet will be safe.
That's "Low Orbit Ion Cannon", not "Low Orbit Internet Cannon".
Is this like a Crips vs Bloods thing? How long until seedy n'er do wells in leather jackets roam around the net, tagging websites with 4chan and tumblr logos?
They had it coming, chaps.
Now. Seconds out, round two. DING DING!
like the Haye vs Harrison fight
only free and far more entertaining.
Can someone perform a virtual weigh in and see the tale of the tape?
It's gonna be a close call, but I reckon 4chan might win due to some dirty box'ing
War! I must write my memoirs!
I've been saying for a while, the first true cyberwar won't be between nation-states but between two groups of hackers, with 4chan probably being one of these parties if it happens anytime soon. I suppose this isn't big enough to count yet, though.
>Implying 4chan anons are hackers.
...The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.
yeah, it's like the nerds equivilant of a friday night punch up, but from the safety of their bedrooms
The funny part was on Sunday night
when every single thread in /b/ 404'd in a matter of seconds and the number of available pages of thread rapidly dwindled to 0. Much OC was posted.
4chan for the win
that is all
Ignore the children.
Same as in animal training, paying attention to them only rewards bad behavior.
Reg journalistic failure - LOIC stands for "Low Orbit Ion Cannon".
Google. Use it, you ignorant m*****f*****s.
I have to wonder why this journalist would refer to a website that keeps no archives as a "repository" of anything.
I don't use either site but I find it all to be amusing.
I would guess
that with Anontalk (4chan's traditional nemesis) finally destroyed for good back in September that it was only a matter of time before 4chan needed another enemy. So it would seem Tumblr is it. Although Anontalk really deserved to die, their shitty spam all over 4chan was really pissing me off. Good riddance. But if they want to attack a site for stealing the lolcat meme, surely they'd be better off hitting icanhazcheezburger, the biggest thieves of the lot? Maybe too big. We'll see.
It's like the WinNuke wars all over again.
We're having a war over... kittens?
Has nobody noticed http://kittenwar.com/ ?
[the kitten on my lap thinks this is boring, she's gone back to sleep, it takes a lot to occupy a miniature pile of fur...]
What a bunch of lasses!
When is someone going to do the right thing...
and shut down 4chan for good? Only people with no lives go there anyway. The damage they do with their skiddie attacks is small or even non-existent but it still doesn't give them the right to do it.
When is someone going to do the right thing...
and shut down bars for good? Only people with no lives go there anyway. The damage they do with their drunken attacks is small or even non-existent but it still doesn't give them the right to do it.
and shut down El Reg comments for good? Only people with no lives go there anyway. The damage they do with their vituperative attacks is small or even non-existent but it still doesn't give them the right to do it.
"shut down 4chan for good"
Might be difficult! It helps channel a lot of energy in a relatively harmless direction, IMO, and anyone who can derail the both the RIAA and Scientologists can't be all bad.
4chan was down for maintenance. It's hard to get things that well organized on tumblr, considering the immense number of scenesters and emo-hipsters that lurk the domain.
Anonymous Coward because...
The best part of 4chan stories is getting the real insider scoop in the user comments (not saying this is). Much like juggalos (take that Tila Teq, jk) their are articulate insiders that must remain low key but are friendly to the cause. Causing havoc on the internet though weak is still amusing in a Bumfights video wrong kind of way.
I hate to question an article in the holy Register but...
I post to my Tumblelog every day. It was a bit slow yesterday, and I had to post a couple of links using the website rather than the toolbar button. But that's been it.
If you say that Tumblr was subject to a DOS attack, I believe you -- but I can assure you that the whole of Tumblr did not go down for a number of days. Didn't happen.
