RIM has announced that its BlackBerry App World now contains over 10,000 apps. That count may seem paltry compared with the Apple App Store's quarter million or the Android Market's estimated 70,000-plus. But that doesn't bother RIM, which claims that its goal is quality, not quantity. "We don't need 200 fart apps in App World …
Umm, how many booby apps?
Purely for research purposes you understand.
Paris, limited feature booby app..
...when Apple alone police their app store it's an example of Steve Jobs' control freakery. Now that RIM is also doing it, it's a sign of maturity,
Oh well, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds..."
One slight difference there....
You don't need to use AppWorld to install every single apps. You can sell it on other stores like S4BB, Handango, or even distribute it yourself. Being kept out of AppWorld doesn't doom your app.
OTOH, being banned from the iStore means only jailbreakers will be able to use your app...
The control freakery
is not policing their app store, it's that they have such a vague rule about what can and cannot go in, that you end up getting in on a whim. Even companies that have a service, which apple freaks need, and one that is not contravening any rules, then it can still get rejected purely because "apple say so". Rim on the other hand; have a clear, legible, it's-this-way-or-that-way policy that is easy to read, understand and apply.
I'm not saying one is wrong or the other is right, just explaining the meaning of control freakery vs RIM's policy.
Really? 'We don't need any fat apps' says a man who has a RIM job.
HAS HE LOOKED IN THE MIRROR ETC
So here we are in the 21st century. We have access to hand held devices that allow us to communicate with people on the other side of the planet. What do some people want to do with them?
Mimic the sounds of bodily functions.
Well, having just migrated off a blackberry, and now using Android and my wife uses Apple I can honestly say I've tried all three. A few observations:
1) RIM's App store may not have 200 fart apps, but it doesn't really have much in the way of "things I need".
2) Both Apple and Android have apps in the category of "things I need".
3) Both Apple and Android apps are "generally" reasonably priced. RIM Apps that fall into the "things I need" category" - even from the same publisher - can easily hit £30+. Yes there are apps on Android and Apple that cost this kind of money, but they're the exception not the rule; and generally offer far more than RIM's version if RIM even has one. RIM app developers seem to think this is normal.
The other side of the coin.
Its all very honourable, refusing said apps. And im sure the business bunch will approve. However childish and puerile they may be though, if 40 grown adults can sit round a table belly laughing at the "brown mosquito" then it cant be all that bad. They are adding something to someones lives however small.
I like fart apps..
Need or Want??
Well, they may be right - we don't NEED so many fart apps, but it really is a question of what we WANT. Personally, I don't think you can have too many fart apps. So there.
I don't *need* to surf porn - I do it 'cos I enjoy it......
Mine's the one with the Kleenex in the pocket.
Quality Not Quatity ?
RIM, try building a phone that is not a sack of shit. Had a Bold 9700 and it was the most unreliable, buggy piece of junk that I have had the misfortune to use.
I feel an App coming on. What do you mean - they don't want it?
Of course ....
.. they're missing the point. Digital farts produce no gas - hence no Carbon Dioxide or Sulphur Dioxide - hence it must be good for the environment. Assuming, of course, that they are actually replacing the real thing.
I've just written an App that mimics cow farts - all I need to do now is convince the herds of the world you buy the new green(ish) iPat to run them on and we can stop worrying about greenhouse gases from coos.
How about Ovi?
As the owner of a Nokia E72, *any* apps would be a step forward.
No.. they have just 8 fart apps when I looked at AppWorld. Really, I don't think RIM give a guff about quality, they're just trying to spin the fact that AppWorld isn't as overcrowded as Apple's offering.
I'm sorry, Shawn. No, really, I'm sorry.
I'd stop doing it, if you'd stop laughing at it!
-Tombstone for the dead
Excellent, I can now change ringtone to an elephant fart
I shall change my managers phone ringtone to an elephant fart next time its in, thanks for the tip-off
No fart apps but ...
as far as the RIM Playbook is concerned ...
There's no Playbook yet!
