Government lunatic magnet goes live

Anyone wondering exactly what Nick Clegg has been up to since not being elected David Cameron's fag deputy need wonder no more - he's been busy setting up yourfreedom.hmg.gov.uk. The site is supposedly an attempt to find out what useless and unnecessary laws the public would like to see removed from the statute book. Plenty of …

Note to Americans.

"Fag" - this word does not mean what you think it means. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fagging

Grenade

Maybe it doesn't mean that...

...or maybe it does.

3 defnations

a cirgarete

a small bundle or packed (faggot of meet or of fire wood)

a younger boy assigned to serve a elder boy in a school

what did you think it ment?

Re: 3 defnations

I thought it meant guys who drive really loud Harleys and annoy everyone.

Lunatic?

Sometimes, it is OK to be a lunatic:

Ignore

And I'm sure they'll just ignore all suggestions with the word "canabis" in it.

Headmaster

That's fine...

... just as long as they don't ignore the ones with 'cannabis' in them ;)

FAIL

Yep probably...

... because its spelled Cannabis...

maybe...

as long as he addresses canNabis thats fine. although after 18 years im looking at stopping

at least learn how to spell it. or call it pot like all the other illiterates :)

definately.

And continue failing everyone for another 60 years by continuing with the same bullshit.

Hey, Listen. Your currently policy DOESNT WORK. About time you took the matter seriously and looked at the alternatives.

(Like anyone in this sh*t hole country is capable, lmao)

hmm

so has anyone suggested the two senisbly things to repeal (Extreme porn and Cartoon child porn?) or are people just using it to demand death to everyone they think is a bit funny?

I can't be bothered to look as I've lost all faith in the western world, I think the mother going on about peadophiles fapping to her childs bum on street view finished me off.

Troll

not everyone shares your addiction to extreme cartoon porn

But both are featuring in the most commented lists

how much did this cost?

performance is horrific.

I wonder if they looked at TownHall from (shudder) Microsoft - http://mashable.com/2010/04/19/microsoft-townhall/ ... runs on Azure so it at least scales and is being used by the Republicans in the US for a similar lighning rod experiment http://www.americaspeakingout.com/ (see report at

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/05/25/gop.website/ )

re performance and scaling

Bad Gateway (502)

The Dialogue is experiencing a large number of users.

come on folks... if you can't scale at least put it into a read-only mode or something and make users who want to contribute go down a specific path. This isn't rocket science.

LOL

See other reg article about £35 million spunked on gov websites.. now this is the new skool, done on the cheap version.. with the server under the desk of the grad student...

You commentards are just never happy!

Welcome

Well done chaps!

Any chance of a repeal of the law of "unpredicted demand" with any website such as this...?

Liberty medal

I wondered what had happened to Blair - I though he was busy sorting out the Middle East.

Last year it was Steven Spielberg

In 2000 it was Watson and Crick

Not certain how those two examples add up to dissemination of Liberty ( in terms of the Constitution), perhaps a Yank can tell explain it

Quick list

- Goodbye perv scanners

- Goodbye IMP

- Goodbye many parts of DE, revise it to be that all the costs must be on the copyright holder, each copyright holder must have acquired the 'evidence' themselves rather than by hiring shady companies, the copyright holder cannot get your details until 2 weeks after you've been informed they want them, the copyright holder cannot get your details unless the case is reviewed by a judge and they conclusively prove beyond all doubt that you personally downloaded the files, etc etc.

Re: Quick list

Right. If anything is changed at all as a result of this bleatfest, I will eat each and every one of your hats without ketchup.

Off to buy a topper

I'll eat your hat if this isn't used as an excuse to repeal the fox hunting ban

Hats

I don't currently own any hats. I'm tempted to buy a bunch of them for a laugh but considering how successful the petitions site was, I suspect in the long run I'd just end up with a load of headwear that I don't want.

How will you know?

We all know the coalition has a list of recent laws it plans to axe for quick popularity. Each and every one will be listed on this site somewhere. How will we know if it was on the hitlist or was added due to this site?

Alert

Hat eating?

I've just requested that the govt legalise hat eating.

Hats

I own 4 hats, 3 of the wooly variants, and a trilby. Mind you being a bit old school I wont suggest anything on the government web site, cos it would just be wrong to be encouraging a lady to eat them with or without ketchup.

Still on the plus side it is Friday, and the sun is shining.

Rollback

The funny thing about being in opposition: you vote against all these bills, which presumably you think are a bad thing. However, when you gain power they magically become acceptable. To the point where no matter how vehemently you opposed them before and how much rhetoric you employed against them, you now keep them, embrace them as if they were your own. In almost every circumstance, the sins of the outgoing regime are tacitly blessed by the new.

Maybe what we need is not to repeal a few cherry-picked and harmless examples from the past 13 years, but to enact one single new law: that legislation that was opposed by a party becomes void when they win power. That way, we'll soon see where an opposition party's true values lie, since they wouldn't risk losing the benefits of laws they actually like, just to score a few brownie points over the incumbents.

The massive logical flaw in this proposition is, of course, that if Labour opposed this bill and got re-elected next time, that law itself would become its own, first, victim.

Unhappy

@Rollback

By the same token, of course, all the laws - bye-laws - orders-in-council etc, etc put in place by a government immediately become rubbish when that party moves into opposition!

Pity the current opposition cannot rescind the invasion of Iraq/Afghanistan - I'm sure they all disagree with those ventures. Of course it won't bring out dead soldiers back to life - might give even Gordo a frisson at the idea of Blair getting the Liberty Medal, though.

chuckling

How long have they been running hmg.gov.uk ? It has a nice redundancy to it. "we're not just any UK government, we're *the* UK government"

Tell me it ain't so! That Great Dane PHK is contributing to that, and expounding on ACM queue how much better than anyone else, including D. Knuth, he knew how to write the algorithms put into that bit of software. The thing ought to be nigh-on infallible by now!

Clegg used the word "crowdsourcing" on BBC Breakfast

in relation to this project. That was as far as I got with it.

Badgers

What crap...

Might as well have called it icanhasdemocracy.gov.uk. At least then, we'd know we're /meant/ to laugh at it. I presume one of the nightly maintenance procedures goes something like this:

DELETE FROM idea WHERE idiocy_level > 0;

Still, if it stops the muppets directing their mindless drivel at MPs for a few minutes so they can get on with their real work (like working out how to get the expenses system back like it was without the nation noticing and getting better booze in the Commons bars) then that's good, I suppose.

<~~ Badger paws and all that.

Big Brother

Come On

OK so the performance is terrible but hopefully they can fix that soon enough.

The idea is a good one, even if most of the comments are ignored at least it allows real people to make a point directly, rather than through MPs who just ignore what their constituents tell them. This is surely exactly what many people here have been asking for so now that it's here how about actually using it rather than complaining.

(Big brother because it seems like everyone loves to whine about him but when they get a chance to actually make a point to anyone who matters they shut up. Typical English whine and no action mentality. This place is SO much like the DM sometimes that it's not even funny.)

As long as they don't get rid of the law that if you are in York you can kill a Scotsman with an arrow fired from a longbow - although I don't see why they don't allow it on Sunday as well.

I do think that the death sentence for treason, by putting a postage stamp on an envelope upside down is a bit extreme. As is 'the severest penalties' for letting your mutt shag the Queen's corgis.

Surely

The first law that a government that wants to show it's freedom and transparency credentials should repeal is the law that bans protesting in parliament square.

Surely that is an easy 5 minute job?

Mines the one with my snowball for the devil in the pocket.

Blairs Medal

To be fair, although I agree the man did make an arse of himself over all manner of issues from Iraq to rendition, Northern Ireland is now largely "fixed", and Blair & the first Labour administration get to take some credit for that.

People have short memories, but cast your mind back - 3500 people dies from 1969 to 2001*. Regardless of what else Blair got wrong, if he had any part in stopping that then fuck yes, give the man a medal.

* arguably making our current crop of fearless suicidal terrorist look like a bunch of pansy-ass fairy boys.

@chuckling

Presumably all the labour advisers have been replaced with tory ones - from M&S

These aren't just any UK government policies - they're organic hand-crafted government policies

pedantry

I think that the domain name hmg.gov.uk breaks Nominet's UK domain naming rules that "no second level domain may be used at the third level" (so .ac.gov.uk is disallowed as is .gov.co.uk etc). hmg as a domain name is the "correct" standard 2LD for government. So this domain name is effectively .gov.gov.uk.

vee did it for zee lulz

Wouldn't it be funny if the site were a trolling project being run by neo-fascists who wanted to prove, in humiliating fashion, that people are unfit to govern themselves (ergo that they must have laws made for them)?

What the site in question needs are well-reasoned comments which, by virtue of not being stupid, would not serve that end.

Unhappy

Thanks to some fortuitous timing...

...I have a quote here from a developer for a site. As well as the base CMS cost it includes nearly $9k for "functional development" and another $5.5k for plugins and core features.

Trebles all round. Ker-ching!

I nearly forgot the six free email addresses. That'll really add value to the several thousand already running on the domain.

posthumous awards

Mo Molem did the donkey work in Northern Ireland.

Once she'd made a breakthrough she was sacked, sidelined and Mr Blair then took the glory for what she'd achieved.

Typical Blair.

Now he gets a medal for it - the man has no shame at all.
