Registering ripped off software

"Some bogus files posing as games from Abel software attempt to trick victims into handing over personal information as part of a supposed game registration process"

What kind of idiot would give real personal data to register software they have ripped off? Unaware of the malware, they would have to believe they were handing their real personal information directly to the people they are ripping off.

WTF?

seriously?

what kind of mp3's are worth "hundreds of thousands of dollars."?

" drops MP3 files on a victim's machine that are elsewhere offered for sale online at an extortionate price of hundreds of thousands of dollars."

The Reason

It's so that they can claim that that you owe them a large sum of money because you've ripped off an expensive product.

Reading comprehension

Nobody said they were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, just that they were being sold for that price -- and the use of 'extortionate' implies a negative judgment of its own with regard to the value for money there.

johnG: that was my first thought reading this.

"This is certainly another illustration of why, in the long run, you may well be better off paying up front for your downloads and steering clear of file-sharing networks."

yeah you proabably are; if you have no common sense what so ever.

that MP3 trick must be illegal, thats gotta be textbook entrapment and extortion. also, given what the japanese are like with public shaming and suicide, i bet sooner or later that company is gonna have a manslaughter lawsuit on its hands..
