Reducing electricity does not cut carbon - its capped in the EU ETS

Reducing electricity usage in the UK does not cut carbon emissions which are already capped at the generating level by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Only cuts in gas usage will provide additional reductions in carbon emissions beyond those that the ETS will already deliver.

Reductions in electricity usage should make it cheaper to meet our emissions reductions targets, as reduced demand should see the price of ETS credits fall. I believe this is why the scheme was renamed to include Energy Efficiency (which is not a bad outcome in its own right).

Hands up all those with gas-powered IT?
