What the hell is wrong with bookmarks?

Because Google don't get access to your bookmarks, so they can't add them to the vast hoard of personal data that they store about you.
Nothing, besides the amount you have
1. Joe average lazy user is too lazy to organise and keep more than a page of bookmarks.
2. At this point browsers do give a visual indication that link in a page is present in bookmarks. Probably they should. This can be a nifty feature.
Obvious addition
If you do a search and there's a starred item on the 4th page of the results, it should mention this at the top of the first page.
