Telcos double down on netbooks with Windows 7

Expect more telcos in the US and Europe to offer customers netbooks with calling plans and running Windows 7, in the run up to Christmas. The head of Microsoft's netbook strategy has told The Reg the "big four" US telcos will offer netbooks powered by Windows 7, in addition to regional carriers. Telcos in Western Europe will …

WTF?

why yes...

...because offering them with vista would be retarded.

Im still looking forward to people taking their machines back; wondering why they can't change the desktop picture... or did Microsoft back track on that?

But where is the...

...babe like the Asus EEEPC has. Of course if it has W7 maybe it can be re-purposed to have a "better user experience" with an operating system with a smaller disk/memory footprint. Oh, it might use a better browser (one that meets standards) than a stock W7 pile of #$%@#.

All anybody worries about in something like this is the browser anyway, and the fact it is "mobile".

Supplier says vendors will sell it's products !!!!!

In a shock announcement, a software supplier said that it expects vendors to sell it's latest product. And with christmas coming up - it expects them to sell a lot of it.

This will be particularly true of new, low-cost products which (due to their low cost and the recession) have proved terribly popular recently.

Thumb Down

Oops I did it again

I thought we already saw that during the dot.bomb boom and this business model failed the reality check. Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it.

I wonder

I wonder how much discount on the telcos MS desktops and MS software in datacentres is conditional on them offering Windows-based (rather than any other) netbook...

Linux

Am I the first to say it?

What about offering plans with Netbooks running Linux? Far better idea.

Alert

Easy recipe for success

For a Telco to distinguish itself, offering a Linux netbook would bring them to the forefront.

And remember ...

... if they succeed, so what.

Really, this does not make things easier for people. Now, instead of calling Acer and Microsoft, I have to call them both *and* AT&T? Uh, no thanks. I'd rather trust my gentlemen vegetables with Lorena Bobbett.

Win7 Netbooks = Fail

Win &7 and Vista are good for running on hardware sufficient to heat a room; for netbooks and smartbooks...NOT! The penguin all the way baby....
