back to article Aussie Sex Party in evangelist head-to-head

The stage is set for an epic confrontation this weekend, as Christian evangelists and members of the Australian Sex Party go head to head on Mount Ainslie near Canberra. The story began back in August, when radical Minister Danny Nalliah blogged about disturbing goings-on atop Mount Ainslie, at a site overlooking the Federal …

Reminds me of my days in US college

We had an evangelistic cretin coming on campus and preaching from the steps of the campus "hub". After two days of cermons starting with words like "Whores and Whoremongers" a couple of students had enough and started to imitate him waving pieces of pizza instead of the bible. So the cretin brought some henchmen the next day and it all ended up with the provost instructing campus security to evict the lot (his methodist tolerance ran out).

However, I thought that such talebanic behaviour is typical of the USA. I am a bit surprised to see it in more moderate lands.

Witches and wiccans

Speaking from Canberra, the local wiccan and pagan community are sure what rev danny was looking at was spilt red wine rather than blood.

How they can be so sure is a very different question. But it's a popular spot for kids to hang out at night.

Rev danny this week also declared that the push for an australian bill of rights was proof of satan's influence over the parliament.

It's going to be a very interesting afternoon up on the top of the hill.

Sanity exits stage left

This is where being a religious person could be an embarrassment. Witches and satanic sacrifices ? Come on. There may be a bunch of nutters who think they are seriously trying to invoke the spirit of Belial or whatever is rad at the moment in those circles, but if invoking spirits was something that worked the world would be awash with angry protoplasms doing ugly things.

If there really is blood spilled in large quantities somewhere, I would prefer someone contact the police and leave the matter to the professionals. If there has been grievous bodily harm done, the victim is entitled to justice, not some ridiculous "spiritual assault" ceremony.

Who are they following?

If these evangelists purport to have faith, and they feel opposed or oppressed by these so-called "witches", perhaps they should actually follow the path Jesus called them to:

"You're familiar with the old written law, 'Love your friend,' and its unwritten companion, 'Hate your enemy.' I'm challenging that. I'm telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty."

They might also bear in mind that the religious right of the day branded Jesus a heretic and hated him for this message. Who are they aligning themselves with - the institutions that hated Jesus or the so-called "rejects" he loved and spent time with.

Good news

"he called on all Christians to commence a 21-day period of fasting and abstinence"

That should reduce the wowser count by a few. Let's make it compulsory.

It wasn't until we'd fired up the barbie that we realised that we didn't have enough fuel to slow roast the joint so I had to hack it into smaller chunks. The slab just seemed like a convenient table. It's meat juices, not blood.

G'day.

I just read the comments...

I thought we were bad. I mean we might be strongly devoted to a particular OS but at least we don't accuse people of witchcraft and sacrificing children.

Well except people who like using Excel, but that's just common sense.

The truth

I've always thought of Wiccans and other neo-pagans as pretty much "fringe", but I'll make this concession: at least they're harmless, unlike the crazies among the fundamentalists. Talk about a lunatic fringe! They make the Wiccans and their ilk look quite middle of the road.

I must add that many fundamentalist beliefs are actually not Christian in any sense. The fundies generally have a very poor understanding of the Bible and are blindly unaware of the many contradictions, ambiguities, and lacunae in the text. A classic example is "prosperity theology" which asserts that God will favor believers by giving them riches on this earth. Meanwhile, Christ himself pointed out that the rich will have a difficult time getting into heaven.

Also notably absent from fundie ravings are charity, love of their fellow man, and similar virtues.

I can't help but think that the fundies' obsession with how other people have fun, particularly when it comes to sex, demonstrates that they have very dirty minds obsessed with sex - normal people take sex as simply part of life and don't waste their time obsessing over it at all.

Sickening hypocrites, one and all: that's the fundies.

The Australian version is especially disgusting.

Sheesh...

I don't know if I should say I'm glad or alarmed that this sort of idiotic fundie is not exclusive to the USA...

Did the IDiots (I would bet they are fans of "intelligent" design too) ask themselves the following simple questions?

- was that really blood?

- even if yes, was that from a ritual/sacrifice?

- is it possible that some kid is having some practical joke time?

And shouldn't the fundies in question get in trouble with the police? Did they report that to the police for investigation? What if it is human blood after all and maybe evidence of a crime?

Oh, well. I guess that asking for displays of intelligence from these people is asking for too much.

Given that fundamentalist Christians have a known propensity for telling everyone how to live and what to believe - I'd much rather have the neo-pagans running the show, at least they mind their own bloody business where my lifestyle choices are concerned.

I love this quote from their website.

The easist way to point out the idiocy of evangelical Christians is ...

... to ask them which version of "creation" they believe in; The version beginning at Genesis 1:1, or the completely different version beginning at Genesis 2:4 ... They always kind of slink away when confronted with the cold harsh reality that their "Bible" is flawed ... and flawed right from the git-go, no less.

I have never met, in my entire life, a practicing lay-person of ANY religion who has read the documentation of their religion of choice for comprehension.

Arab proverb

All merchants have the same religion, no matter what they are selling, religion, world views, porn, totalitarian horrors such as scientific atheism, the right to exploit workers, women or self nominated victim groups.

( Coffee shops excepted maybe ;-)

Money fixes all of their deeply held beliefs.

Odd how christian groups whose founding figures regarded idols and spirits as powerless have successors so frightened of spirits, pagans and some-one elses rituals.

WTF?

You see a stone covered in a reddish-brown substance which may or may not be blood. do you:

a) Inform the police and let them investigate furthur

b) Ignore it

c) Take a giant leap onto your favourite bandwagon, rant, rave and make an asshat of yourself

Has the pastor had lots of experiance with sacrifice and what the aftermath looks like, as well as good knowledge of the various covens around the place and their rituals (who traditionally dont to sacrifice, same with satanists).

I only wish I wasn't on the other side of the country to canberra as I'd go up there and perform a little blood sacrifice of my own. I know who is getting my vote next time round.

My comment on the site - won't appear tho'

Get a life you stupid people! Did anyone actually test the alleged stain for blood. Was it human? If animal, could it not be just be an ordinary animal killing another animal for food? When ever you see something you don’t understand do you all say “It must be a sign from God” if it’s positive to your beliefs or “A sign of satanism” if you don’t like what you see. Do you never consider that the “sign” could have a simple explanation. You’re all a bit like the crop circle believers who think aliens have landed when the simple explanation is that it being done by humans to generate a bit of income for the farmers or just as pure vandalism/art.

I doubt that it will appear, but at least the moderator will read it.

As Ghandi onces said

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

It was true then, and it was true now.

This reminds me...how much does "Rev" cost again? £20 or something? Rev. BigYin. Yes...could have some giggles with that.

@Ralph 1

A very wise man said something along the lines of this to me:

"When someone annoyed, upset or made me angry; I would analyse what was in myself that allowed them to destabilise my emotions and grant them such power over me. Now I rarely get angry or upset, even why they are being very insulting and aggressive, I just smile and say 'Thank you'. It's a much more pleasant way to be..."

"...that and it really bugs the hell out of them!"

Concrete block stains

Just checked out the fundamentalists' website.

Did they not consider it could be rust or other metal oxides washed off whatever's sitting on that concrete block? Or paint washed off by a shower of rain shortly after painting?

Radical Christians - putting the "mental" into "fundamental" for over a thousand years...

Gotta be a sacrifice, right?....

Couldn't possibly being anything so innocuous as a spilt bottle of wine, or a kids prank. These are the types of moron who, when they hear hoof-beats think zebra! not horse.

Why are people like this allowed to setup a church, get granted tax breaks, and allowed to pour their garbage into the ears of impressionable lackwits? Surely if you are, quite rightly, not allowed to spout lies about someone without fear of the slander laws, you should not be allowed to make sweeping claims that pagans are committing blood sacrifices in order to influence government. Make them prove their claims under threat of disbanding their church and taking down their bile-spewing website. Make a few examples of these lunatics, and discourage other fact-dodgers for talking absolute bollocks at every turn.

Phew, I feel better for getting that off my chest.... :-)

What are you afraid of?

So someone sees blood on a stone up a mountain and decides to organise a prayer meeting about it. What's the problem?

If there's nothing in it, it's just a bunch of people talking to someone who doesn't exist and no harm done. If there is something in it, they're praying about the blood-shedding on a mountain and not about gays and people shagging what they shouldn't be shagging.

It sounds like the Sex Party are jumping on something for the sheer spite of it, nothing more. They're the first to complain when religious people turn up at their shingdings and shout nasty things. And their choice of alternative is interesting; they hate a religion that says what they do is wrong and prefer one that would kill them for it?

Why do they even care? They should be worrying about the fundamentalists lobbying in government buildings, not those having prayer meetings up a mountain, unless those prayer meetings are to a real person who can actually do something.... and the Sex Part people are afraid?

Sounds like the Sex Party want to remove the rights of people to worship freely, even if that worship (or praying or whatever) is up a remote mountain where nobody can see them.

Bill Gates because WIndows, also, is supposed to be open for anybody, as long as they do things that Microsoft likes.

whay assume blood?

I think you'll find that the substance is in fact a divine bolognese sauce that has touched this mortal plane as a result of HIS noodly appendages contact with the Earth. it is only the continual pushes from his noodly appendage that keep us rotating and allow us night and day, vital so that we might enjoy happy hours, weekends, and drink covered wenches (or cabin boys as appropriate)...

this can easily be proven by a quick lick of the substance revelaing its tomatoey goodness infused with all manner over vitamin loaded herbs and heart warming red wine.... go on you know you want to.. lick it.. it tastes good doesn't it?.. lick some more mmmmmmm

further proof of his benevolent noodliness.

@DATmafia

Hahahahahaha...*gasp*...hahahahahahahahahaha!

"There's no older or more disputed rivalry than between Christians and non-Christians. "

Well, except for pretty much every other religious dispute. Relatively speaking, your cult, sorry, religion is relatively recent, being only 2 millennia old or so. If you were to take a quick look at the region where your cult started, you'll find that Jews and Muslims, for example, have been killing each other over whose god is bigger than whose for longer than that. Throw into the mix all sorts of ancient religions, such as Baal worship, which is mentioned in your bible, so by definition must predate it, and you might find that your starting statement is a little specious.

Also, you might find you are taken a little more seriously if you can grasp the concept of a paragraph.

Finally, to respond to, "Let's hope El Reg is open minded enough to let a Christian and their point of view to be permitted on the site. Although I'm not dumb enough to think I won't be ridiculed or made fun of for it". Make no mistake, I'm not ridiculing you for being a Christian. I'm ridiculing you for being an idiot who just happens to choose Christianity as his outlet, and seems sadly uninformed even on that matter.
