A University of Pennsylvania student was sentenced to three months in custody on Tuesday after confessing his part in a cyber attack that crashed the server of the US uni's engineering facility two years ago. Ryan Goldstein, 22, of Ambler, Pennsylvania, will also face five years on probation following his release from custody ( …
let me get this right...
Black lad is guilty of child porn offences.
White lad with jewish surname is guilty of hacking and child porn offences.
Black lad gets harsher sentence. Am I right? Seems like this is typical american law enforcement... is it a slow news day? Next you will be reporting that black kids get pulled over by the cops more often than white middle class kids driving similar cars, or that the hacks only print stories about cute white kids that go missing and not the black ones.
he'll get away with it this time
But I hope Goldstein will be on a 'watch list' and when the FBI need an easy win on kiddie porn, they will go for him.
burn the witch
that is all
Did you see them?
No? Then how do you know they were child abuse images instead of just regular child porn?
Must be a UK thing
Calling child abuse. Here state side said its position of child porn, position of images depicting a minor doing lewd acts . So unless they have proof he hurt a child , there would be no child abuse charges. in fact I'm not sure yo even have child abuse laws at the federal level
I know this guy relatively well from the "underground" IRC servers he used to hang in. He came across s a well educated, well spoken and nice guy. At least, compared to the usual kiddies that hang around these servers.
The hacking charges themselves were fairly trumped up, Digerati (Ryan Goldstein) did not have much to do with virus/trojan writing or distribution, he left that to AKILL and co. All he really did was mess about a little and give access to his UNI server to some people he shouldn't have. Now, I know many on here would have him hung drawn and quartered for that but all in all it was pretty low level stuff he did. His main role on these servers was as a moderator.
The kiddie porn stuff I did not know about though and is pretty despicable, not what I imagined him doing at all. I find it very hard to believe that this young well spoken guy would be interested in this stuff but other than it being planted on his computer it looks the way it is.
His computer got infected last year by someone on the IRC server he moderated and his private files were rifled through, it is of course possible that the stuff was planted there at this time, I would say this is unlikely but believe me, the people on these servers would do anything and nothing is beneath a lot of them. However, as much as I would like there to be a simple explanation it looks like he had been downloading this stuff and for that he should have gotten the same jail time as the guy standing next to him in court. Telling tales on your "friends" should not be a considering factor when being charged.... Especially when the charges & crimes are completely unrelated....
Crying at 3 months in the slammer... He was lucky. Illwill got a couple of years and all he did was distribute a piece of windows source code that was easily found on the www anyway.
Shut down IRC.
Most of the hackers/script kiddies/trojan/virus writers/software/music pirates on IRC or mentally unstable teenagers who probably all fap over images of iraqi beheadings and hangings as well as child porn.
As Anonymous Coward Posted Wednesday 22nd October 2008 22:41 GMT said, most of these people will stop at nothing to prove a point. They are juvenile and puerile.
I knew Ryan Goldstein (Digerati) very well. When he was idling on IRC most of the time. Or running a decent size IRC network.
We all knew about his traits with young boys. But he was infected a few times by various people. Notibly CM2 of SSGROUP had a grudge against him. After files emails etc where leaked. There was never any hint of real CP. And from what we knew of his manner. (Well educated, well spoken)
It wasnt something you could put to him. (I know its the internet and you cant really tell)
Im sure i even had a discussion about CP with him before. And he had very against views to it. I would like to see what the FBI really found.
What is the laws on freedom of information stateside?
Boy gets angry and does a DOS attack against CASTLE COPS which ramped up to $70,000 in damages just because he got angry his message he posted was deleted.
But you get less punishment if you are a pedophile and host the images on the internet.
"Very against views to it"
Well, he would say that, wouldn't he?
He may only have provided access, but I presume he had full knowledge of what was intended? If he knew what was going on, then in my opinion, he is equally responsible.
I suspect Willams' sentence may have something to do with his publishing child pornographic images...
Now, I hate to be the antagonist here, but...
"viewed images of child pornography since he was only 11 or 12"
...does that still class as child porn, or just porn? - Regardless, he's no long 12.
Re: Did you see them?
> how do you know they were child abuse images instead of just regular child porn?
Because regardless of whether acquiring these images involved physical or mental abuse, involvement in it is pure abuse of power & trust.
> I find it very hard to believe that this young well spoken guy would be interested in this stuff
Again, being the antagonist, I doubt people have much control over their attractions. Whether they choose to pursue them or not, is a different matter.
