Oracle shareholders choke on Ellison's package

Anonymous Coward

Going forward !!!!!!!

Flame

I bloody HATE the increasing use of "going forward". It's like the flu. Spreading virus-like into all the media and "work speak". Speak and write English FFS.

Would not:

Investors attending Oracle's annual general meeting in California Friday are being asked to support a "say-on-pay" plan that could see them approve the pay and stock allocations granted to Ellison and other senior Oracle executives "going forward".

Be better written:

Investors attending Oracle's annual general meeting in California Friday are being asked to support a "say-on-pay" plan that could see them approve future pay and stock allocations granted to Ellison and other senior Oracle executives.

To quote from Radio 4:

" When someone says 'going forward' it assaults the ears just as, when a colleague starts slurping French onion soup at a neighbouring desk, it assaults the nose."

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!

STOP IT ! STOP IT ! STOP IT !

Come the revolution people who say "going forward" will be among the first up against the wall directly after footballers and anyone in the fashion industry.

Nice "head"line!!!

Your headline...

...is chock full of win, sir.

That is all.

Matt Bryant

Nonsensical?

"OK, we think you've massively over-perfromed, but we want to cut your pay. And the we think you having 20+% of shares shows a short-term commitment to the company."

?????

I detect a hint of the old green-eyed monster at work, it's not like Larry hasn't made the shareholders enough money.

RE: Going forward !!!!!!!

I agree. Please modify the article accordingly - this could be a quick win for you guys.

heh

he should sell all his shares and announce "Well fuck you all, see how much money you make now you dumb shits." Walk out and buy a self cleaning sex yacht.

Fraser

Hmm...

If he was running a bank I suspect a lot more people would have a lot more to say about his pay.

PS I also hate "Going forward" and pretty much all work-speak. Can we have another El Reg vote on if it'll be used, as we did with "mobe"?

Dr. Mouse

Excessive.

Right, firstly, the headline is top notch.

Onto what I wanted to say: @Matt Bryant

"OK, we think you've massively over-perfromed, but we want to cut your pay."

This may be true, but he earned $83m last year. $83m!!! Thats $227,000 (£130,000) PER DAY!!!

Yes, being CEO he takes a large amount of responsibility, so he should be compensated for that. Yes, the company has done well, he should get a bonus. But this is rediculous.

Then again, same cam be said of most CEOs/Execs, Footballers, Politicians... But the shareholders have a right to say "Hold on, this is our company too, stop hogging the dough!"

As do the people working for the company who probably made more of an impact on the profits than Mr Ellison. Its quite obvious that many will be upset with the size of his package.

pay

I agree with Dr Mouse. Ultimately the CEO is just a decision maker. It's the people below him that do the actual work and make things happen. And even when it comes to decision making the CEO will have people doing the necessary research and providing him with advice. Big responsibilities? Sure. Hard work? Not really. Give less to the fat cats and more to the people that actually do the work!

RE: Dr. Mouse

$83m compares on a profit compares very nicely to the wedge our banking CEOs have taken home yet left the economy and their companies in the tank. Would you prefer he was paid on a commission bassis based around company performance? Consider that all $83m is for returning $5.5bn in revenue and his "commission" is a very small percentage compared to what salesgrunts get on the average Oracle sale. And then compare Oracle to other IT companies such as Sun where the stock value is so unpredictable it's like Russian roulette at best, and TBH, if I was an Oracle shareholder I'd be beating Ms Westcott round the head and telling her to shut up!

@ Going Forward!!!!!!!

Nice to have a friendly visit from the Language Police, mate. Do come again when you can't stay quite as long. I was wondering, however, about the linguistic correctness of using seven exclamation marks in the title of your comment and whether the use of an entire line of text for one word in all capitals and followed by four exclamation marks be considered, um, "non-standard"? What I was wondering is how you slipped those two examples of non-standard English past your mates in the Language Police. Especially ironic in the midst of a complaint about another non-standard usage, don't you think?.

By the way, congratulations on the public display of intolerance for those you don't like, it's so reassuring to know that all one has to do is scratch the surface and one can find an unforgiving tyrant such as yourself.

FAIL.

Fail, fail, fail, fail. FAIL!

Idiot meddlers need to STFU.

He's bloody making you wankers rich.

Pay the man his due and (at the risk of repeating myself) STFU!

And, going forward, I think the fucking socialists who are trying to redistribute this man's just desserts are ripe for having a bus dropped on them, from atop a parking structure.

Not that I have any strong feelings in this matter.

Fuckheads.
