Intel's Atom laptots 'are here'
Intel gave its increasingly crowded mobile chip range an airing at IDF Tuesday, showing systems running on its mobile quad-core chips and on the 'Calpella' platform due to launch next year. Dadi Perlmutter, executive VP and general manager in Intel’s mobile platforms group, showed systems running on the Intel Core 2 Extreme …
WTF is a Laptot
I googled it incase i am missing something but all i got was this
Laptots were African colonial troops in the service of France between 1750 and the early ... Senegalese laptots in Central Africa with French officer, 1890
Its from wikki so its probably wrong
What's a laptot?
Laptot doesn't sound particularly appealing.. regardless of the CPU used. Sounds like a toy doll that would just cry and urinate all over you, why does Intel think people would want this?
Dadi Perlmutter
now there's a name you just have to love...
Missing the point
Personally I want something just fast enough to do the job. Give me lower and lower and lower power requirements over faster and faster and faster chips any time.
laptot = uttra portable sub notebook
If so I think it's a pretty clever name and shame all you haters.
@Anonymous Coward
Exactly right... I'll almost always trade speed for battery life. How fast does it have to be, anyway? If you can decompress and display a film in real time, that's all that's needed for the majority of tiny portables.
Re: laptot = uttra portable sub notebook
Of course not. It's a typo. I'm just not going to fix it because that isn't what I do all day long when I'm not comment-wrangling.
Tsk.
Re: Missing the point
AC1> "Give me lower and lower and lower power requirements over faster and faster and faster chips any time."
I'd settle for something that doesn't run so hot for my next choice (not surprised, or complaining, honest - my EeePC[701] has already proven useful at work when I'd only brought it in to keep myself amused on the train). This sounds promising.
[@Ed: WTF indeed. Did you not think to follow the search results that led back to El Reg for an appropriate explanation??!]
@Laptot = computer for children?
No ... laptots are small computers that use laptotty in their advertising
@laptot = ultra portable sub notebook
Laptot, get it, that's a good name for those ultra, small, or small cheap computer laptop style device thingies.
Kudos to elReg for thinking up such a neat word.
Laptot :)
i prefer "baby laptops" ;)
anyway, it's better than "Small Cheap Computers" which is a crap name and kinda too vague as well, a desktop could be "small" and "cheap"?
here's a leedle collection of (mostly reg!) stories about the little bloighters!
cheers,
bill ;)

Howabout....
Lapslop = for manufacturers who throw any old hardware in.
Lapflop = over priced, over hyped, under powered.
Lapjot = so underpowered you can only use notepad.
Lapyacht = weather proofed laptop.
.........Oh the English language....ain't it fun!
Sometimes I think Intel is going to quantity not quality
So does anyone think Intel hasn't really bumped performance over the last year but is simply inundating the market with so many chips people will think, "They must be designing better stuff then AMD, in the last 6 months they've released 3 generations of CPUs!"
Slaptop
slaptop, the mobile PC that doubles as a personal defence system
laptot = Santa's little petioner
I want a minilaptop for X-mass please.
