back to article So what could the MoD learn from the Stasi?

Headspace is Reg contributor Amber Marks's exploration of how the state and private sectors are trying to exploit the science of smell to watch and control citizens. Over the coming weeks, we will be publishing exclusive extracts from the book, which is published by Virgin Books and available here. Today we present Chapter 5 …

next to take the stage

Don't quite get the transition between paragraphs 1 and 2. Quite a conference if the snoozing, showering, and spritzing was all on stage.

we don't stop and search the guy, we terminate him.

As arab, sorry Brazilian, in a large coat, (oops, denim jacket) who ran (walked) into a London tube station found out.

Gung ho, loose canons.....

"If we think someone is carrying a bomb, we don't stop and search the guy, we terminate him."

Presumably, if exercised wrongly, such extrajudicial killing, even with a 00 license to kill, is murder in the first degree, albeit officially 00 excused, and a monumental Intelligence blunder, which would have the Intelligence source spotlighted for Investigation/Prosecution?

Something which Amber may be well qualified to offer a Legal Opinion on?

Terminating someone for what you think but do not know is somewhat fraught and extreme towards being perverse, and some would even say more than a tad psychotic/psychopathic/mad and bad. However that would surely be a judgement which would be transferred to the Proxy/trusted Intelligence source in any officially excused monumental blunder?

er... tilt

"And are you saying that if we suspect someone is a suicide bomber, we invade his privacy without any prior suspicions..."

...the prior suspicion is surely that the target is a suicide bomber. Dork.

That aside, the issue is then whether the suspicion is reasonable in the circumstances and THAT is where we MUST put the chokehold on the Police State.

viz EVERY such assessment must be captured to an immutable audit trail and subject to monitoring and approval (even if, occasionally, after the event) by a JURY not a Judge and certainly not a politician or policeman.

That way we'll know whether or not their actions were reasonable in the circumstances.

Nothing less than this can protect us from State licenced abuse.

Florence Ambrose to the white courtesy phone...

Onviously the answer is to bioengineer canines to sentience, so that they can give evidence under oath.

How quaint

How quaint , in this new age of 21st Century of Propaganda , people consider privacy an issue , where as the authorities merely use any old excuse irrespective of legality as a tool for conviction "stitch style " where they will produce a wonderful line of BS to confuse , bewilder and befuddle the jury to force a conviction on the grounds of hearsay and perjury from serving Police Officers !

Sadly , both privacy and democracy died the same day that was the end of so called "Cold War" with those so called evil communists who were merely trying to defend their own borders from unlawful incursions from the west and then each new subsequent generation of technology since producing powerful tools to remove the very thin veneer of so called western style democracy , as the powers that be seek ways and means to extend their draconian authority above and beyond what the old and new laws permit within their own borders treating all citizens as grist for their pet hate mill !

Choices , what choices indeed , when we employ people like Sir Ian Blair , who can't or won't tell the truth like it really is and should have been sacked that very day when he uttered the first convenient lie along with many other nameless evil black hearted self interested persons in positions of authority seeking to become the new authoritarian ruling elite not unlike that which ultimately destroyed what they strove to create from lust for absolute power and then caused the fall of the Roman Empire from the rot within the top echelon all those centuries long ago !

I'll get my coat , mines the one with the MET bullet holes in the front whilst allegedly trying to flee to a better more democratic life in Venezuela !

One rotten apple at the heart spoils the barrel of pork?

heystoopid,

Liars employed by anyone are always vulnerable to the simplest of questions...... for any failure to reply with comment which can be further followed and questioned for a reply which can be further followed and questioned for a reply which can be ....... is proof enough of dodgy character in a dodgy character. In a Police Commissioner like Sir Ian Blair it would be despicable and a stain on the Met which would render them ......well, it is hard not to conclude no better than a criminal organisation 'avin' a larf at the Public expense.

"who can't or won't tell the truth like it really is" ...... We all can tell the truth so it is not a matter of choice, ever, it is a deliberate conscious act of will to deceive whenever we don't..... and most definite Plonker Territory for the Intellectually Disturbed and the Emotionally Deficient.

MeThinks it is a very Crowded Unreal Space. Hmmm? Is IT akin to Virtual Reality or a bastard wannabe clone abusing IT?
