Closer to home there is a council that decided against the wishes of everyone but themselves to remove some perdestrian bridges over a railway - for the simple reason that it had failed to maintain them for many years and so they were starting to get dangerous.
Yes, reason for removal - they didn't spend money they were required to spend to maintain them.
Solution to their self created problem - remove them.
They had a tight window to hit because there were already works being carried out on the line. So they granted themselves planning permission without following procedures - had they followed procedures and had to go to an independant planning body then they would have been unlikely to have got it.
The contractors then committed further offenses by cutting down trees where birds were nesting.
Can I see the council prosecuting itself - no chance. They'll be sat there working out ways to protect themselves against the complaints that have been made by members of the public.
